Colwell" with censor No 2630 cachet in red, Greek PPC with cds of 18NO15 & message headed "3 AGH" (= Australian General Hospital), "Evening Express" tobacco card with brief note headed "Gallipoli 7.11.15", etc, a couple of Imbros and Mudros covers,
two PPCs from soldiers recuperating at Malta & small-part '[WOUNDED P]OST OFFICE/[crown]/[MALT]A' h/s on piece, also Australian War Memorial photo of Lt-Gen Birdwood, etc. Extensively annotated by Tony Finlayson.

1915 ANZAC Landings covers to Tasmania all but one with imprint of the Excelsior Palace Hotel (Palermo, Sicily), three with cds &
registration labels of Palermo 7 or Palermo 20 x2 (one with 'GENOVA POSTA ESTERA/(CENSURA)' cds, the earliest - not registered - with lengthy letter on matching hotel notepaper, one with '[Red Cross]/BRITISH HOSPITAL/FOR OFFICERS/(EXCELSIOR PALACE
HOTEL)/PALERMO SICILY' b/s in red, a few filled filing holes. Very scarce group. [The letter states "Forty two officers...all out of danger but not yet fit for work have been sent to Palermo...as convalescents. We left Malta ...in Lord Dunraven's
yacht, the "Grianaig" [real photo PPC included]...All expenses are being paid by the Military Authorities...Yesterday we saw in the papers that...troops occupying Suvla Bay & Anzac had been withdrawn..."]

1916 (circa) complete 'NEW SOUTH WALES/Interstate Parcel Post' black/pink label specifically printed for 'FARMER & CO LTD Sydney'
franked with KGV 4d orange pair tied by 'CHIEF PARCEL OFFICE/SYDNEY' undated hand-held roller cancel, to Tasmania with a remnant of the address label attached, minor faults. The rate was 8d up to 1oz inter-state parcel.

1917 (Feb 21) The National Bank of Australasia Limited envelope to USA with three-colour franking of Kangaroos Third Wmk 2d grey, 2½
blue & 3d olive tied by largely very fine 'LATE FEE/SPENCER ST VIC' cds, censored with Melbourne 'Passed' handstamp in violet on face, repaired ipper-left corner & a few blemishes. The rate was double 2½d per ½oz foreign letter plus Late Fee, which
at the time was another rate of postage (reduced to 1d per item in 1922).

three with 4½d violet frankings one from Blakehurst NSW with 1½d red apparently added in transit at Kogarah to make up the correct rate, 1931 from Perth with 'TWO/PENCE' overprint on 1½d red strip of 3, 1937 with German 'MUNCHEN 2 BZ' oval TPO
backstamp, etc, condition mostly fine to very fine.

1933 (circa) complete parcels label with Kangaroos Third Wmk 9d two pairs & Large Lyrebird 1/- pair tied by a largely very fine
strike of the huge rubber 'PARCELS OFFICE/GPO/MELBOURNE' undated cancellation (deteriorated - "scalloped" - frame), Cat $350 for a single 9d on cover. Rare & attractive. Ex Arthur Gray: sold at our auction of 30.10.2015 for $435. [The rate was for
between 8 & 11 pounds to an adjoining State, or for between 5 & 8 pounds to a non-contiguous State, New Guinea or Papua. NB: In the period prior to 1.3.1933, there was no 5/- parcel rate. The 16.12.1929 rates for between 5 & 11 pounds were
inadvertently copied by Richard Breckon from the rates as at 1.3.1933] (Image1)

1935 (Aug 22) registered airmail to Germany endorsed "Australia-Greece-Germany" with KGV 1/4d blue and Hermes 1/6d pair tied by Sydney
cds with blue & black R label alongside, Athens '-7 IX 35' transit and 'ERFURT/10.9.35' arrival backstamps, a couple of trivial marks. The rate was 2/1d for the first ½oz and 2/- for the second ½oz for 'all-the-way' airmail service plus 3d
registration fee. This rate provided airmail service by QANTAS/Imperial Airways to Greece and by Lufthansa to Germany, as compared to airmail to France or England and onwards by surface at the lower rate of 1/9d for the first ½oz and 1/8d per
additional ½oz.

1935 Anzac Commemoration 1/- frankings on three registered First Day Covers, illustrated Anzac Landing registered cover, 1935-36
airmail covers to GB x3 (one with 1d late fee) or Germany (redirected to Holland), solo franking on intrastate parcel tag, pair on 1937 first flight Australia-USA via Hong Kong, and pair + 6d Large Kookaburra affixed in lieu of Postage Dues to 1935
cover from GB with invalid franking (minor faults), also eight covers with the 2d including underpaid to Denmark with Danish Postage Dues, condition variable. An excellent basis for a One Issue One Frame exhibit. [The taxed cover from England is
probably the best example we have seen - edging out a 9d Macarthur - of postage stamps used to pay postage due]
