1207 S imageMorobe: 'MOROBE/15.MRZ.19[15]' German New Guinea-era office handstamp (Powell #89; rated G; ERD) fine almost complete strike in violet on Papua Lakatois 4d olive overstruck with 'IOMA/21MAR15/PAPUA' cds where received by Runner Mail. Powell states (p18) "about March-April 1915, no New Guinea stamps being available, the messenger brought Papuan stamps to Morobe for local civilian use as a matter of necessity". This office handstamp was later used as a censor device: see Lot 1156.

1210 c image1928 (April) to Sydney posted directly onto ship with Huts 1½d solo tied by 'SYDNEY/19AP28' arrival cds with largely very fine strike of the Sydney 'LOOSE SHIP/* LETTER * ' handstamp (Hosking #1501; rated C) alongside, a couple of minor blemishes. The rate was 1½d domestic letter; no late fee was paid for posting on the ship, but the item was not taxed.

1212 long cover image1932 (circa) long envelope to England endorsed "Aust and Karachi-London Airmails" with scarce franking of Huts 'AIR MAIL' overprints 9d tied by 'POST OFFICE/SALAMAUA' cds and other stamp(s) alongside now missing, damaged in transit with British '[Foun]d open or damaged/[and] officially secured' black/brown label at right, some bends & blemishes and slightly trimmed at left. The 9d paid the 3d per ½oz Australian domestic airmail surcharge plus the 6d per ½oz Imperial Airways Karachi-London surcharge, so the missing stamp(s) presumably paid the 2d letter rate plus any additional airmail surcharges if over ½oz.
