1127 F image1867-70 PERF 11½-12½xROULETTE: 'TEN PENCE' in Blue on 9d yellow Printed on Both Sides SG 59a with the original impression on the 'reverse' orientated upright relative to the 'face', very fine 'KAPUNDAAU14/69/[SA]' cds, Cat £1300. Rare & underrated. Probably Ex Colonel Harry Napier. BPA Certificate (1983). Superior to Harry Lower's and Michael Blake's examples - both with separation issues - that sold for $1320 & $1515 respectively. Peter Jaffé's example - creased - sold for $1435.The truly remarkable aspect of this stamp is that, the surcharge being on the front only, the reverse is a 9d yellow which, of course, was never issued.

He established a business as hardware importers & shipping agents, that later became a prominent engineering firm, specialising in well-drilling equipment.

A very scarce usage: fewer than 10 covers have been recorded with the 3d on 4d used for its originally-intended purpose of paying the inter-colonial shipletter rate. Ex Wise (1950) and Bernhard Forster. As noted in the docketing within, the sender was "JCC Vielhaack/Adelaide". The family name is found among immigrants from Germany in the 1850s. Harry Lower's similar 1873 cover sold for $1515.
