SWEDEN: 1940 Aktiebolaget Svensk Rakklinga cover to Sydney with Linne 15ore & Crowns 90ore tied 'SANDVIKEN/7.6/40' cds, the entire address covered by 'Aterstalles till avsändaren' [= Return to Sender] Post Office label dated '20 december 1940', a few blemishes. The Swedish label advises that the article is unable to be forwarded due to the suspension of service via Italy subsequent to its entry into WWII. Found amongst the Swedish Chamber of Commerce hoard, so must have subsequently been forwarded under separate cover.

SWITZERLAND: 1935-37 group including 1935 postcard to Ballarat Vic at 90c rate, cover to Melbourne (b/s) endorsed "Londres-Karachi" at 190c rate and another to Adelaide (b/s) endorsed "Brindisi-Darwin" with Airmails 35c x2 & 1f, 1935-36 to Brisbane at 100c single rate and 170c double rate x2, 1937 to Sydney at 230c rate unusually routed via Hungary with Budapest & 'MATYASFOLD/937APR-7/REPULOTER' transits and 'RANDWICK/16AP37' arrival, etc, condition mostly fine. SWITZERLAND: 1938 cover to Victoria rated "4g" weight with League of Nations 30c & Helvetia 80c tied 'ZURICH/-7.6.38' cds, Melbourne '24JUN/1938' arrival b/s, light central fold & some staining (possibly from immersion in water). Carried on Imperial Airways Flying Boat flight IE660 during which Ceres made a forced-landing in Lake Dugari, Central India when caught in heavy monsoon rain en route from Karachi to Singapore and was unable to continue, being stuck in soft mud in the shallow lake; the mail was carried by bullock cart for 32km and by car for a further 15km to join the railway at Lake Gwalior, where the relief aircraft Capella was waiting to continue the service. SWITZERLAND: 1939 registered to NSW endorsed "5gr v Chiasso" with Scenes 10c & 120c tied 'LOCARNO/-3.III.39' cds, red & black R label, Brindisi '-4.3.39' transit and Sydney '14MR39' arrival b/s, light central fold & minor blemishes. Carried on Imperial Airways Flying Boat flight SE95 during which Carpentaria was damaged by a Chinese junk on 9.3.1939 while moored at Bangkok and the mail load had to be transferred to Canopus to complete the service.

SWITZERLAND: 1939 to Queensland with 'g("5")/uber-via/("Chiasso 2")' cachet and single Airmail 1f tied 'GENEVE 10/28.XI.39' cds, Brisbane '12DEC/1939' arrival b/s and early 'OPENED BY CENSOR' label with single line of text & 'PASSED BY/CENSOR 3' cachet on face, light central fold & partly-repaired faults. Carried on Imperial Airways Flying Boat flight SE199 during which Corio suffered tail damage at Tiberias Palestine on 4.12.1939 and the mail load had to be transferred to Coogee to complete the service.

SWITZERLAND: 1942-45 covers all with 1941 Airmail Scenes frankings and all censored (except the earliest posted in January 1942) with two or more USA, GB, German & Australian labels each, two endorsed for PanAm Atlantic Clipper service but others with arrival b/s showing 8+ weeks travel most likely carried by BOAC Horseshoe Route, noted two registered each with 2f values (one a scarce single franking) both with New York and Honolulu b/s carried by US Army Transport airmail service to Hawaii and onwards by ship, condition quite variable. Important group ideal for further study. (9)

NEW ZEALAND: 1916 cover with rare albeit philatelic franking of Auckland Islands General Grant Expedition 1d green strip of 3 tied by one of three strikes of the 'AUCKLAND ISLANDS/23/MAR/1916/CATLING'S EXPEDITION' cachet, to "Mr JWH Bannerman/Bluff" & endorsed "Per Enterprise" in red at left. A major rarity of Antarctic exploration. [Our vendor states only three covers are recorded with Auckland Island frankings. Included is a brief article featuring one of the other covers, similarly addressed & endorsed but also with 'BLUFF/7JL/16.NZ' arrival b/s, which indicates that the covers were delivered by the post office. The article states that Bannerman was editor of the 'Bluff Press' & that he probably provided the labels & canceller]
