Carried on Imperial Airways Flying Boat flight IE655 during which Caledonia was delayed due to weather at Marseilles and again at Athens after hitting a buoy on 23.5.1938, and Corio experienced mechanical problems.

GREAT BRITAIN: 1911 'Coronation 1911/FIRST UK AERIAL POST' illustrated envelope in scarlet showing biplane over Windsor Castle, to Sydney with KGV Downey Head 1d tied 'FIRST UNITED KINGDOM/AERIAL POST/SP9/1911/LONDON/-2-' cds, matching insert with short message including "... this paper is awful ...", envelope with minor faults at U/L. Carried between London and Windsor on the first day of service; envelopes were sold at 1/- (the more often seen postcards cost 6d) and this is the only example in this colour recorded to Australia. (2)

GREAT BRITAIN: 1931-44 extensive group carried by Imperial Airways services mostly regular-size covers plus postcards including KGV 6d single frankings x3 and a couple of uprated Registration Envelopes, variety of frankings up to Seahorses 2/6d, some KEVIII issues, also advertising, commercial perfins, a few censored, noted 1931 with KGV 1/- block of four & another endorsed "via Karachi and Internal" with KGV 9d single, 1935 franked 4½d only with Melbourne "T("1/9")" cachet, 1940 with British 'Found Open ...' seal, most identified by Proud including 20+ interrupted & delayed flights, condition variable but mostly fine. Excellent opportunity for study & display. (180+)

GREAT BRITAIN: 1934 to NSW with KGV 3d & 1/- tied London '31DEC/1934' slogan cancel, 'T.P.O. 2 SOUTH/UP19JA35/2/NSW' transit & 'COOTAMUNDRA' arrival b/s same day, fine condition. Carried by Imperial Airways flight IE303 during which Sylvanus force-landed at Mirabella on 9.1.1935; Arethusa was delayed at Jodhpur due to engine trouble 12.1.1935; and most significantly Athena force-landed on a beach at Point Stuart 100 kms from Darwin after the pilot flew without rest throughout the evening - which was prohibited - to make up time. Sanford 'Air Crash Mail of Imperial Airways & Predecessor Airlines' #350116 which states "No mail is known in collectors' hands".

GREAT BRITAIN: 1938 Fred Pattinson & Co cover to Victoria with KGV 2d & 6d pair and KGVI 1d tied 'BRADFORD YKS/21JA/38' cds, Melbourne '4FEB/1938' arrival b/s, minor blemishes. Carried on Imperial Airways Flying Boat flight IE621 during which Cordelia force-landed at sea 20km from St Nazaire (France) on 23.1.1938 due to engine problems& inclement weather; towed to shore she continued on the following day, but spent two days in Rome, presumably for repairs. Sanford #380123; "No mail is known in collectors' hands". [See also Lot 1875]

GREAT BRITAIN: 1974 to Claremont WA with Machin 10p tied 'PITTENWEEM/19NO/74/FIFE' cds (Scotland) and fine 'DELAYED EN ROUTE/--AIRCRAFT HI-JACK --' h/s in violet applied at Perth alongside, a few blemishes. Carried by British Airways VC10 flight from London to Singapore which was hi-jacked on 22.11.1974 at Dubai; 23 passengers - including Australian aboriginal activist Kath Walker - remained aboard & were taken as hostages to Libya; demands for the release of Palestinian prisoners in Holland & Egypt were agreed to after a German national was executed; recovered mail destined for Western Australia received this explanatory handstamp.

GREECE: 1933-45 group with wide variety of frankings & rates, noted Greek currency control cachets x9 including 1940 to Cairns x2 both also with Brisbane censor tape, with 'CONTROLE DU CHANGE' labels x2, range of Greek & Australian censor markings noted 1939 with early Melbourne un-numbered cachet & '8SEP' arrival b/s, 1941 registered from 'AKRATA' with Sydney censor tape, plus 1945 to Cairns x3 with 'PAR AVION/AU DELA DU CAIRE' cachet in blue, violet & black respectively each also with scarce post-liberation Greek censor labels, condition mixed but mostly fine. Carried on Imperial Airways Flying Boat flight IE666 during which Cassiopeia force-landed Jul 6 at Koh Samui, an island off the coast of Siam/Thailand, on 6.7.1938 with engine trouble, and the mail was transfered to Cordelia; the Sydney transit has a date error '9JLY' for '12JLY'.

Very early airmail from this origin to Australia.

INDIA: 1911 to Yendon (Vic) with KEVII 1a tied 'FIRST AERIAL POST/[aeroplane]/1911/U.P. EXHIBITION ALLAHABAD' h/s in magenta, 'ALLAHABAD/18FE.11' and 'BOMBAY/20FE/11' b/s, closed tears at top & minor staining at L/L. Carried on the world's first official powered flight airmail service by french aviator H Pequet in a Sommer Farman-type biplane from the United Provinces of Agra and Ouhd Exhibition to Naini Junction, a distance of about six miles. The only example from this important flight recorded to Australia. [The addressee Clyde Fiskin won the House of Representatives seat of Ballarat at the 1934 Federal elections.]

INDIA: 1938 Moolchand Jeykishandas & Co cover to Victoria with KGV 4a & 8a tied 'AHMEDABAD R.M.S./8JUN38' cds, 'JODHPUR/11JUN38' transit b/s, small edge fault at U/L & a few blemishes. Carried on Imperial Airways Flying Boat flight IE660 during which Ceres made a forced-landing in Lake Dugari, Central India when caught in heavy monsoon rain en route from Karachi to Singapore and was unable to continue, being stuck in soft mud in the shallow lake; the mail was carried by bullock cart for 32km and by car for a further 15km to join the railway at Lake Gwalior, where the relief aircraft Capella was waiting to continue the service. INDO-CHINA - CAMBODIA: 1931 registered to Netherlands Consulate General, Sydney endorsed "Poste aerienne/Via Batavia" with Temples 5c, 10c & 20c on face and 40c block of 4 on back tied 'PREY VENG/5/MAI/31/ CAMBODGE' cds, red & black R label and black/red 'PAR AVION' etiquette, 'BATAVIA/23.5.31/CENTRUM' transit and Sydney '23JE31' arrival b/s but mss "Refused/by Sec/R23/6/31" red ink on face and 'REFUSE/REFUSED' cachet on back with Sydney 'DEAD LETTER OFFICE' cds alongside, returned with 'BANAM/30-7/31/CAMBODGE' b/s, couple of minor blemishes. Carried by KLM Holland-Batavia service experimental extension to Australia paying 10c letter rate, 15c registration fee plus double 85c airmail surcharge specific to this flight.

LATVIA: 1940 cover to Melbourne with Arms 50s x3 tied 'RIGA/25.1.40/GAISA-PASTS' cds, censored on arrival with Melbourne label & boxed cachet in violet, a few blemishes. Presumably carried by airmail via Sweden to join the Imperial Airways service and avoid transit through Germany, but no transit markings to confirm; Latvia was occupied by German Forces in July 1941; this is the only airmail cover from Latvia censored in Australia recorded by our vendor.
