Seated Quarters continued...
Lot Symbol Lot Description CV or Estimate
61 image 1871-CC AG overall w/ a few marks. Another rare Carson City Seated Quarter. Though more were minted this year compared to the 1870-CC (10,890 vs 8,370), the 1871-CC is a rarer coin. PCGS and NGC combined have graded a total of only 70 1871-CCs, whereas the combined population of the 1870-CC is 110. The present coin, with a complete obv rim, may be considered stronger in condition than the previous lot; however, it has a weaker rev and some marks. With a greysheet price in the grade of Good at $8,500 our estimate seems conservative. In any case, here is another great opportunity for those seriously interested in the Seated Quarter series. 62 image 1872-S perhaps VG detail but rough surfaces from an attempt to remove a foreign substance that once adhered to the coin. Bowers notes the peripheral weakness on the rev from K5 to K9. From a mintage of only 83,000 experts call this coin very rare in all grades, with frequency more consistent with the Carson City issues of the same period. Roy Ash did a study on Seated Quarters for the Gobrecht Journal in 1987, and noted that among the San Francisco issues, the 1872-S was the one least encountered. (Image) (imageb)

63 image 1878-S AG. Bowers notes that this is a rare issue. Mintage is 140,000 and the coin is rarely seen today. Only 146 have been certified in all grades (combined NGC and PCGS), and that undoubtedly counts many re-submissions. (Image) (imageb)

79 image 1812 O-105 F. (The obv on O-105 is known for being weakly struck.) This coin has a prominent die crack going thru the 8 in the date, making it appear to be an O-106, but there is no evidence of the rev crack that is diagnostic for 106, so O-105 is the variety. (Image) (imageb)
