General Winfield Scott "Why don't you take it?". Black cartoon patriotic design showing Winfield Scott and Jefferson Davis as dogs with Washington D.C. in the middle, on yellow cover bearing 3¢ dull
red (26) tied by blue circular grid cancel, matching "Elmira N.Y., Jun 16, 1861" cds to Georgetown N.Y.; reduced at right, some wear, F.-V.F. Estimate; $150 - 200.
The cartoon and other similar representations were created
early in the war when General Winfield Scott commanded U.S. forces protecting the nation's capital from the threat of Confederate invasion. It depicts General Scott as a bulldog wearing Scott's military hat and Jefferson Davis as a frightened dog
dressed in a Confederate flag and wearing a plantation owner's hat. Scott dares Davis, "Why Don't You Take It?", with Washington D.C. shown as a prime rib cut of meat between them. In April 1861 the isolated U.S. capital was exposed to invasion until
sufficient U.S. forces arrived and secured the surrounding region. (Image1)

"The Only compromise for Treason.". Slogan on red and blue American Flag and Firing Cannon patriotic design on cover bearing three 1¢ blue (63) singles, deep early printing shade, tied by two
strikes of "Jefferson City Mo. Dec 24" cds to Cincinnati, Ohio, original letter datelined "H. Qrs. Jeff. City, Mo., Monday night Dec 23, 1861" from an officer of the occupying garrison with some interesting war content "…I
think that lady you tell about must have been 'awful' green. She must have come from Missouri. People are one shade more verdant out here than any place I ever saw before…Yesterday the Secesh prisoners taken by Pope passed down here on the way
to St. Louis…The Secesh were in the front part of the train…They appeared to be in good spirits and were as saucy as you please…Altogether, they were as hard a looking set of Christians as you could find anywhere. I was greatly
amused at a conversation I heard carried on between a crowd of Iowa 11th boys and a carload of Secesh…Whenever a good sally would be made on either side, all hands would join in the laugh. Here's a specimen. Secesh, 'Damn your Dutch hides,
what are you looking at? 'Iowa, 'Aha! there you are where you ought to have been long ago-looking through bars. Wish you a Merry Christmas in St. Louis.' Secesh, 'Thank'ee…Was you at the Springfield Races?' Iowa, 'Yes, been to Boonville?";
cover reduced slightly at left, Very Fine and scarce patriotic use from the Jefferson City. Estimate; $300 - 400. (Image1)
