Folded letter endorsed "per Le Globe" with red "Ourte Mer, 15 Fevr, 45" cds and "22" due rating, reverse with French transit and receiving backstamp, Very Fine, the Globe, a whaling ship, in 1824 suffered a mutiny and the incident was widely published which influenced writers such as Herman Melville and James Michener.

2300       imageRussia, 1855 Odessa to Constantinople via Vienna. Folded letter with Odessa oval handstamp and various blue rate markings, reverse with bold "Wien, 21/6" transit date stamp; horizontal fold, F.-V.F., still a nice example of the land route during the Crimean War naval blockade.
Estimate; $2,500 - 3,500.

The naval blockade from 1854 till 1855 of the French and British marine during the Crimean War enforced the land route via Vienna. During this time it was impossible to use the easier Black Sea route.
