In combination with 1865, ½r blue on judicial wrapper to Quito, all tied by blue "Ibarra, Franca" two-line handstamp from the pre-adhesive period, manuscript 7oz weight notation; cover missing bottom flap and file fold affecting top stamp in pair, otherwise Very Fine.

AN EXTREMELY RARE AND ONE OF TWO KNOWN ON COVER USAGES OF THE IBARRA PRE-ADHESIVE CANCELLATION USED ON THE FIRST ISSUE - ONE OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT CANCELLATION USAGES OF ECUADORIAN PHILATELY.

This cancel has been recorded by Ayora on fewer than five single stamps off cover, with none struck in blue. It was used during the first months of 1865, prior to the arrival of new postmarks in Ibarra.

Consisting of one pair (lower left) of the earliest dull orange buff shade and six pairs of the latter dark orange buff shade, all with full margins, in combination with 1865, ½r blue (2) on large judicial wrapper to Riobamba, all tied by "Quito, Franca, Mayo 2, 66" cds's, manuscript "1 La 13 oz" weight notation at upper right, Very Fine and choice, this wrapper represents one of the finest examples of the early 1 reales buff issues.

Nearly full margins all around, crease in bottom left stamp, tied by dotted lozenge handstamps on part wrapper to Riobamba, with "Guaranda, Fevr 5, 66" cds's at center of block, Very Fine, this being the largest multiple of this scarce shade and among the largest multiples of Ecuador's first issue.

All with full margins, on on early 1865 judicial linen front to Quito, canceled by manuscript "Riobamba" and condensed "Riobba" postmarks, manuscript "22oz" weight notation at upper right; one pair with wrinkle at bottom, still Very Fine, perhaps the largest number of manuscript canceled examples of the 1r orange buff on any piece.

166     3 imageEcuador, 1865, 1r ochre. Small pre-use wrinkle, tied by red fancy "PI" in star handstamp on wrapper to Portoviejo, with matching "Guayaquil, Franca, Feb 6, 73" cds alongside; cover with some insect erosion across cover, F.-V.F., this being one of five known examples of the "PI" star cancellation from Guayaquil.

This cancellation has always been attributed solely to Quito. Of the known examples from Guayaquil, two are in the National Museum in Washington. Contemporary uses from Santa Elena and later Tusa are known.

Margins mostly large to just into frameline at lower left, fine impression, tied by "3154" dotted lozenge handstamp on folded letter from Santa Rosa (a small town south east of Guayaquil), with matching "Guayaquil, Feb 1, 65" cds alongside, Very Fine, one of at least two known usages of the "3154" cancel used in Guayaquil on this day, this cancel was later used in Quito from July 1870, with 2001 Moorhouse certificate.

168     3 var. imageEcuador, 1865, 1r orange buff, diagonal bisect. Lower right portion of stamp tied across bisect by neat "Babahoya, Dec 2, 67" cds on folded letter addressed to Juan Jose Flores, President of Ecuador in Quito, Very Fine and choice, a very rare 1r buff bisect usage from the small town of Babahoya.
Scott No. 3 var.; Estimate $500 - 750.

Due to a shortage of the ½r denomination at the end of 1867, bisect usages were required to meet the demand.

A SPECTACULAR ECUADORIAN-FRENCH COMBINATION FRANKING - ONE OF THE FEW ECUADOR-FRANCE MIXED FRANKINGS KNOWN IN PRIVATE HANDS.

Carried by the vessel "Ville de St. Nazaire", this letter is one of twelve known complete covers from this service in private hands and certainly one of the finest examples.

Margins ample to clear, tied by bold sharp "Franca" in dotted lozenge handstamp of Guayaquil on 1873 folded letter to New York City paying the 2r rate up to ¼ oz., with red "New York, Paid All, Oct 19" entry cds on reverse, with letter datelined "Guayaquil, Set 23, 1873", Very Fine, one of the latest, if not the latest usage of the first issue, as the second issue had already been introduced in late August of 1873.
