ONE OF TWO USAGES TO ITALY BEARING THE FIRST ISSUE AND ONE OF THE TWO EXISTING COMBINATIONS OF CLASSIC ECUADORIAN AND ITALIAN ADHESIVES.

The other Italian usage, which sold in our April 27, 2019 sale, was only a faulty cover front and brought $8,000 hammer.

Ample to large margins, sharp early first period impression, tied by neat "De Oficio" boxed handstamp on folded letter sheet to Quito, inside docketed "Enero 21, 1865", Very Fine and choice, this handstamp was applied to official correspondence and rarely used as a cancelling device.

ONE OF TWO KNOWN EXAMPLES OF THE "DE OFICIO" BOXED HANDSTAMP USED AS A CANCELLATION.

This cover is addressed to Juan Jose Flores, President of Ecuador. The origin of this cover is unknown, as various towns used the De Oficio mark on official mail.

Ample to large well balanced margins, tied by neat "Latacunga" provisional box cancel on Judicial wrapper to Quito, red crayon "1oz" weight, docketed "16 de Enero de 1865" on reverse, Very Fine and choice, believed to be the second earliest reported use of a first issue on cover.

This Latacunga pre-adhesive postmark was used during the first half of 1865, fewer than ten recorded usages of this provisional handstamp used as a cancelling device.

The singles in shades, each with full strike of red "Daule, Franca" town cancel with dates from Sept 21, 71 to March 9, 72, margins ample to just in, one with tiny tear, all Very Fine strikes, a very rare town postmark, with these three assembled over a 20 year period.

The latest example in this trio appears to have the "E" in "Duale" changed to "N" possibly a place holder substitution for a broken letter.
