Cover front franked with G.B. 1880 4d gray brown, vertical pair (71) tied by "Lombard St, Ap 16, 81" duplex postmarks, with portion of "via Southampton & Panama" routing endorsement, forwarded to Riobamba and franked with 1872, 1r orange, horizontal pair (10) tied by purple "Quito, Mayo 25, 81" cds, F.-V.F., a unique Ecuador & British combination franking usage, with 1984 H. Under the UPU which Ecuador had recently joined, this letter should have been carried free to its destination. However, due to ignorance of the new rules, this was apparently ignored and the 1r stamps were applied at Quito to forward the letter to Riobamba.

Full margins, tied by red fancy "P.I." in star cancels on wrapper to Otavalo, matching "Quito, Abr 15, 73" cds and manuscript "8oz" weight notation at top right, year docketing on reverse; vertical file folds affecting left pair, otherwise Very Fine, an extremely rare on cover usage of the fancy "P.I." in star cancellation.
Scott No. 1; Estimate $400 - 600.

The P.I. stands for "Porte Interno" or internal fee. It is believed that this cancellation was produced in France and was used in Quito starting in 1870. This cover shows a later date than its reported use from Santa Elena, indicating the existence of at least two cancelling devices of this type.
