Folded letter datelined "Massa di Carrara, 20 de Abril 1787" addressed to Ambato in the Audience of Quito, with red "Cadiz" straight line transit handstamp and manuscript "Po'nal Guiana. = Santa Fe de Bogota" routing and "Navega N.S. del Carmen (a) la Voladora" ship endorsement, Very Fine, among the few known Colonial letters originating from other than Spain.

Originating in Massa di Carrara, Italy, this letter went via Cadiz, Spain to La Guaira (Venezuela) on the vessel "Nuestra Senora del Carmen", alais La Voladora, and overland via Santa Fe de Bogota to Ambato in the Audience of Quito.

116       imageEcuador, 1790 Guayaquil to Cremona, Italy. Folded letter datelined "15 de Octubre 1790" with red "Peru" small type origin handstamp of Guayaquil, with red "Nueva Espana" two-line transit handstamp believed to be applied at Mexico City, reverse with boxed "Madrid" crown transit handstamp and fancy receiving postmark, manuscript "3" due ratings on front and reverse, Very Fine.
Estimate; $1,500 - 2,000.

ONE OF TWO SURVIVING COVERS FROM ECUADOR TO EUROPE FROM THE 18TH CENTURY AND ONE OF TWO KNOWN EXAMPLES OF GUAYAQUIL'S SMALL "PERU" POSTMARK.

The Peru mark is smaller than another known from Guayaquil during the late Colonial Period. Similar marks from other west coast South American ports were apparently applied to outgoing maritime mail to show its origin from the Spanish territory known, collectively, as "Peru".

Folded letter sheet with pencil "June 3, 1800" notation on reverse (archive date), with red "Espna" straight line handstamp, manuscript "Baraca N.S. de Reglia, alias La Reyna, Buenos.aires" ship and routing endorsement, reverse with bold "Peru" straight line transit handstamp on reverse, Very Fine, an unusual routing for a Colonial letter.
Estimate; $200 - 300.

Originating in Spain, this letter went via Buenos Aires on the vessel Nuestra Senora de Reglia, alias La Reyna, then overland probably to Lima, where the Peru transit mark was applied to its destination of Quito.

AN EXTREMELY RARE ECUADOR & PANAMA FORWARDER COVER TO THE UNITED STATES BEARING THE FANCY PHILADELPHIA FULL RIGGED SHIP MARITIME HANDSTAMP.

This cover was sent from the sailing ship "William & Henry" at Guayaquil to the ship's owner based in Salem. This cover reached Philadelphia after nearly four months in transit.
