Fancy arced stencil Steamboat marking on large size folded cover dateline "Steamer Modern near Vicksburg, 28 February 1847" to Lynchburg, Virginia, postmarked "New Orleans, La. Mar. 4" cds with matching straightline "Steam" handstamp and manuscript "30" rate paying the triple rate, endorsed "Via Richd, Va.", light overall aging, Extremely Fine, Illustrated in Milgram.

ONE OF THE FINEST EXAMPLES OF THIS RARE STENCIL MARKING WITH ONLY FOUR RECORDED.

The "Star Spangled Banner" operated between New Orleans and Cincinnati before tragically sinking on June 29, 1847, approximately 15 miles below Baton Rouge, resulting in the loss of 125 lives.
