Schuyler J. Rumsey Philatelic Auctions Sale - 133

The Arthur K. Wachtel Collection of Mint Never Hinged United States Stamps - 133 - May 26, 2026

The Arthur K. Wachtel Collection of Mint Never Hinged United States Stamps is one of the finest of its kind. Mr. Wachtel set out to acquire never hinged examples of United States postage stamps - whether originally issued with or without gum - an objective widely considered nearly impossible in its scope.

Through decades of dedicated pursuit, he succeeded in assembling a remarkable array of rarities seldom found in this elusive condition. Among the highlights are the 1847 5¢ Orange Brown (Scott #1b), the 1857 5¢ Brown (Scott #29), and, most notably, the unique mint never hinged 1869 90¢ Pictorial - an extraordinary centerpiece of the collection. The Back of the Book is equally compelling, featuring an outstanding selection of Postage Dues, Officials and the rare Newspaper stamps, including the ultra-rare 1875 $6 Ultramarine, C.B.N.C. Hard Paper Special Printing.

This offering presents a rare opportunity to acquire stamps of the from a collection defined by both ambition and achievement.
