Didius Julianus, AD 193. Bronze Sestertius (23.22g). Rome.IMP CAES M DID SEVER IVLIAN AVG, laureate head to right / RECTOR ORBIS, emperor standing facing, head to left, holding globe and scroll; S-C across fields.aF/VG, usually found in
poor condition.RIC IV 16; C. 17; Banti 6; BMCRE 28.The mint of Rome could quickly produce new issues, as was the case with Didius Julianus, who, on 28 March AD 193 outbid Flavius Sulpicianus, the father-in-law of Pertinax, for the empire at the
praetorian camp auction by promising to pay each man 25,000 sestertii. The Praetorian Guard by this time was composed of sixteen cohorts of 1000 men each, which meant that Didius had to come up with a total of 40 million sestertii, 10 million
denarii, or 400,000 aurei if he wanted to remain emperor. The enormous sum did not buy him the loyalty of the Guard, however, as they abandoned Didius when Septimius Severus marched on Rome. Didius was killed after ruling for only 66 days.Cf; for the
