208 Essay imageYOUTH IN SERVICE Lothar Wüst was the artist who had designed these 12 motifs. However, the Ministry of Propaganda turned down this topic as absolutely unappropiate. „You should know that shortages occurring due to the war cannot be a theme to be depicted on postage stamps..“ he was reprimanded. Lothar Wüst said after the war that he personally apologized at the Ministry of Propaganda. Three complete sets of these photo essays „survived“ plus some single items. One of the three complete sets was offered in 2016 in a rarity sale. Estimated at 12.000 Euro, that set was knocked down at 21.500 Euros. 211 Essay imageOLYMPIC WINTER GAMES It was already in 1938 that the Ministry for Propaganda had informed “organized artists“ that they should submit drafts for commemorative stamps honoring the Olympic Games of 1940 which were then cancelled due to World War II. “The most important thing“, as stated in the request, “is, that the design of the motifs shall depict sporting events in active motion.“ As shown here, the artist implemented this request in the four drafts for the Winter Olympics. These typical drafts were found in the archives of the Staatsdruckerei of Vienna. The designer of these motifs for the Winter Olympic Games of 1940 is unknown. The four drafts are a unique piece of the history of the Olympic Games. (Image)

215 Essay image1940 HELIGOLAND - 50 years anniversary of German possession This photo essay depicting the first draft of Erich Meerwald is unique. The commemorative stamp appeared slightly modified. There is no coat of arms in the final motif. The obvious reason was, that the British Victoria crown on a stamp of the Third Reich would not have made a very positive impression. (Image)
