London forwarders paying the 10d postage due and reposting the
letter to Boston, where struck with black Maltese Cross LS / 28SP28
/ 1849 datestamp and black 19 / CENTS debit marking, carried by
Cunard Caledonia and arriving Boston October 12, there assessed 24c
due, the reverse with red London exchange-office datestamp (27
Sep), fine-very fine. The enclosed two-page letter from George Read
provides a detailed account of the Malaga fruit and wine trade,
reporting a “considerable deficiency” in the fruit crop and the
disruptive effect of cholera on shipments to England and the United
States, and remarking upon active market speculation despite these
difficulties and lists vessels including the Sylphide, Nautilus and
Isaac Franklin, carrying substantial consignments of raisins, wine

and endorsed “Per Baltic,” the reverse with partly legible Calcutta
dispatch, red London Paid, blue Liverpool transit and London “L /
FE 3 / A” datestamps, with two manuscript “14” notations, fold
separations and small tears professionally reinforced and a
stabilized area of ink corrosion at top resulting in the loss of
part of one manuscript line, otherwise intact, the letter from
merchant William F. Goodhue to Boston shipmaster and merchant
William F. Parrott involving the trade in Indian saltpetre, an
essential ingredient in gunpowder, and regards the payment of

Sweden, to the Bishop Hill Colony, Illinois, with extensive
emigration, inheritance, economic and religious-revival contents,
addressed to Jon Olsson at “Bishopshill Postoffice,” bearing
Söderhamn (13 Mar), Heddinge (19 Mar), Hamburg (21 Mar) and Aachen
(22 Mar) datestamps, bold black “42” debit handstamp with blue
manuscript “7” and “14” and black “17” accounting markings, the
reverse with Hamburg Stadt-Post-Amt, Coeln–Verviers railway transit
and Boston Br. Pkt. (11 Apr) datestamps, heavily toned with edge
wear and minor internal faults, but intact and fully legible
contents. The letter, addressed to the Swedish communal settlement
founded at Bishop Hill in 1846 by religious reformer Erik Jansson,
concerns a range of financial, familial and spiritual matters
between emigrants in Illinois and relatives in Sweden. Much of the
correspondence concerns the liquidation of family property,
inheritances, powers of attorney and attempts to recover money owed
across the Atlantic, the writer observing that “here in Sweden is a
great shortage of money, even for those who have money they are not
able to get it in.” He also describes the contemporary evangelical
revival: “here is a great movement in spiritual matters,” adding
that “God has sent his spirit which works continuously to spread
the Gospel’s light and truth, so that many awakenings take place in
both our and almost all surrounding congregations.” Particularly
interesting is his report that “Colporteurs are sent out and many
go to preach in both schoolhouses and yards, without being stopped

Destination) handstamp applied at the Delle exchange office, with
boxed SUISSE / PAR / DELLE entry marking, the reverse with intact
embossed red wax seal of the Bernese police authorities and
Altkirch receiver (30 Oct), some toning, mostly at bottom and to
back, the postal markings otherwise very fine. The contents
comprise an official police communication concerning the
apprehension of a fugitive named Biehl, described as an escaped
forçat, or hard-labour convict, while noting that surveillance was

on trans-Alpine travel, gold holdings and the political upheaval of
1830, stampless three-page folded letter struck with black two-line
FRIBOURG / 3 NOVEMB despatch marking, circular P.P. and crisp
A.E.D. (Affranchie à l’Étranger jusqu’à Destination) handstamp, the
reverse with manuscript 30 décimes and Marseille receiver (13 Nov),
fresh and very fine. Written in the aftermath of the July
Revolution of 1830, the writer records describes the expense and
difficulty of Alpine travel, observing that “It is very expensive
to travel in this country because of the slowness of the carriages
and the haste that one is forced to make.” He notes decision to
retain wealth in physical gold rather than spend or deposit it in
Switzerland: “Do not believe that I am without money; I have gold
with me that I am keeping, and which will follow me to France. I do
not want to spend it in Switzerland,” a choice he links to the

3 / DE BALE” transit, manuscript “2/6” rating, London Paid (17 Aug)
datestamp and heavy black “5” handstamp, endorsed “durch Brittische
Packetboote” and “par Havre Liverpool & Boston,” the reverse with
Zürich (13 Aug) transit, slightly soiled, otherwise sound with
complete and legible contents. Written shortly after Prussian
forces suppressed the Baden Revolution, prompting political
refugees and defeated insurgents to cross into Switzerland, the
letter records the resulting border mobilization, economic
uncertainty and increased interest in emigration. He describes
depressed business conditions and unpaid debts, noting that “No one
can pay under the current circumstances…there is nothing more to be
earned here,” and reports the renewed deployment of border guards
following the Baden uprising, fearing that events would “turn to
the disadvantage of Switzerland.” The correspondence concludes with
another acquaintance preparing to emigrate: “Jos. Müller is also
traveling to America…briefly, everyone, everyone wants to go to

Florence via Semlin, stampless folded letter, with contents,
addressed to Filippo Matteoni in Florence, Tuscany, rated 8
(crazie), with bold circular Austrian Sigillum Sanitatis
Semliniensis disinfection cachet with imperial double-headed eagle,
the letter opened and treated at the Semlin quarantine station and
subsequently resealed with intact pink wafer on reverse,
characteristic rastel punctures and localized staining from the
purification process, the front further struck with boxed Ottobre
transit marking, unusually well preserved. Written at
Constantinople on September 25, 1824, the letter travelled overland
across the Balkans to the Austrian frontier quarantine station at
Semlin, near Belgrade, where correspondence arriving from the
Ottoman Empire was subjected to disinfection before being permitted
to continue. The contents, written by the merchants Fratelli Marion
refer to difficult business conditions, their “deplorable state”
