261 cover   image1820 (October 11), stampless folded letter from Faro to Lisbon,
written during the Portuguese Liberal Revolution and discussing
commercial prospects and trade with Brazil, bearing faint
straight-line “FARO” origin handstamp, addressed to Lisbon, without
backstamps, some light uniform aging, else fine, with clear
contents. Datelined “Faro 11. 8bre 1820,” less than two months
after the Liberal Revolution began at Porto on August 24 and only
weeks after the movement spread to Lisbon, the letter reflects
contemporary uncertainty over Portugal’s political and commercial
future: “We do not know what turn commercial affairs in Portugal
will take after the events that have taken place, but we believe in
a better future.” Laborde seeks information concerning vessels
sailing from Lisbon to Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro and other
Brazilian ports, asking “whether they are dispatching vessels from
your port to Brazil, to which ports, and the timing of their

262 cover   image1858 (November 8), H.M.S. Euryalus naval officer’s letter from
Lisbon to Wimpole Hall, with contents describing Prince Alfred’s
royal visit and the Charles et Georges diplomatic crisis, crested
entire addressed to the Countess of Hardwicke at Wimpole Hall,
Arrington, Cambridgeshire, with fine embossed blue H.M.S. Euryalus
ship’s crest on the reverse flap, rated 6 in manuscript for the
single 6d packet rate from Portugal to Great Britain and showing a
partial red boxed PACKET LETTER transit handstamp, the reverse with
red London transit (15 Nov) and blue Royston double-ring receiver
(15 Nov); a few tears to the back flap and light soiling, otherwise
an attractive naval usage. Written on H.M.S. Euryalus stationery
during Prince Alfred’s visit to Lisbon, the extensive three-page
letter gives a first-hand account of the reception accorded to
Queen Victoria’s second son, noting that he received “all the
honours due to him” from the King of Portugal and referring to an
forthcoming presentation at court. The writer also comments on
Lisbon itself, describing its “very high houses but rather narrow
streets” and praising the Opera as one that “cuts out any we have
in England.” He describes the former King of Portugal as the
“handsomest man I ever saw” despite having “lost the roof of his
mouth.” The writer also records Portuguese anger toward Britain for
failing to prevent the French from removing their “prize out of
this harbour,” a reference to the Charles et Georges affair, which

double-ring A.E.D. (Affranchie à l’Étranger jusqu’à Destination)
handstamp applied at Paris (unrecorded by Pothion), the reverse
with manuscript rate notations and green wax seal, very fine. In
the three-page correspondence to Rothschild Frères in Paris, the
writer discusses fluctuations in exchange rates, the effect on
“gold shipments,” heavy demand for silver coin and delays at the
Imperial Mint, noting that “The Imperial Mint is so busy that one
cannot obtain coin in bulk” and that gold coinage remained at a

272 cover   image1915/1917, prisoner-of-war correspondence from Josef Kučera in
Biysk, Siberia, and Enakievo in the Donbas to Třebosice, Bohemia,
comprising nine cards documenting his transfer across the Russian
Empire, comprising Red Cross reply cards, official prisoner-of-war
formulas and civilian open letters, with violet Biysk camp censor,
Russian field-post and camp headquarters markings, boxed “Вскрыто
военным цензором No. 4” military censor handstamp and red
triangular and diamond “K.K. GEMEINS. ZENSUR-ABTEILUNG WIEN”
cachets, all addressed to Emilie Kučerová near Pardubice, the Czech
messages intact and legible, with usual wear for POW mail, a fine
group. The correspondence traces Kučera’s captivity from the Biysk
detachment in the Tomsk Governorate to Enakievo, an important coal
and metallurgical centre in the Donets Basin where prisoner labour
formed part of Russia’s wartime industrial economy. His early
Siberian cards convey the isolation of captivity: “I haven’t
received even the slightest news from you…I am constantly thinking
of you.” After his transfer to the Donbas, Kučera names fellow
regional conscripts Berdíček, Král, Šičinský and František Cholík
and asks about the harvest at home. The final card, dated October
12, 1917, was written during the Provisional Government and shortly
before the Bolshevik seizure of power, when war and revolution were
disrupting communications throughout the former empire; weary of
captivity, he writes, “Hoping that it will end soon so that I can

273 cover   image1916/1918, First World War correspondence outgoing prisoner-of-war
cards from Austro-Hungarian Oberleutnant Josef Rudolf in Russian
captivity, archive of 36 censored cards to Marie Rudolfová in
Prague, tracing his transfers from the Perm-Verchnia Milly
(Verkhniye Muly) detachment through Solikamsk to Astrakhan,
including 12k double-eagle stationery, Red Cross prisoner forms
inscribed “Для военнопленныхъ” and dual-response cards, with violet
Perm camp censor strikes, Solikamsk and Petrograd military censor
handstamps, blue tracking endorsements and red triangular “K.K.
GEMEINSAMES ZENSURARCHIV WIEN” entry cachets, the messages complete
and densely written in legible Czech, light corner wear and some
toning, else fine with mostly good strikes . Spanning the winter of
1916 through July 1918, the correspondence documents camp
conditions, climate, work, relief packages and family life during
the final years of the Russian Empire and early Russian Civil War.
In the Urals, Rudolf writes: “Today I skated for the first time...
the evening I pass by drawing... yesterday we celebrated Christmas
Eve with a brightly decorated tree and fish,” later recording
receipt of “a light shirt and two packs of tobacco.” Following his
transfer to Astrakhan, he describes the extreme heat and his
carpentry work making frames. Throughout the correspondence he
follows the education of his daughter Minda, closing his final
letters: “I am completely healthy... hoping for a happy reunion,

remnants of the original attached A.R. form; fresh and unusually
well preserved, a very scarce usage. The 1926 Tughra issue was
printed by Whitehead, Morris & Co. of Alexandria, with a limited
quantity produced on glazed papier glacé rather than the standard
porous paper, giving the stamps a smoother surface and sharper
appearance; examples on cover are scarce, particularly in multiple
