273 99 image1908 5c blue, cancellation study of singles and multiples, comprising nine singles and three blocks of four, the singles including a selection of clear town cancellations, an R.P.O., oval R registration handstamp and unusual bold red PAID straight-line, the multiples cancelled by Berlin c.d.s., Toronto roller and Toronto circle-of-bars obliterator; the odd imperfection, nevertheless a deceptively difficult group to assemble, fine.

The 5c denomination was issued to pay the one-ounce U.P.U. letter rate. As most Canadian foreign mail was directed to the British Empire or the United States, where the 2c preferential rate applied, comparatively little demand existed for the 5c value; examples with clear dated cancellations, particularly from smaller post offices, are therefore considerably scarcer than what might be assumed.
