(SEP.25). 2c stationery cover is uprated with a 2c Map, two different Provisionals and a 2c Numeral, paying the old UPU rate of 10c, overpaying by 3c. The new 7c (2c + 5c) rate took effect on January 1st, and not everyone must have known, or some

Registered Cover Montreal to the Phillipines, mailed Montreal on JUL.22.1901 (Type V precursor squared circle free strike) and addressed to the U.S. Marine Hospital in Manili [sic] Philippines. Two additional Montreal precursors on back,
alongside a JUL.25 Vancouver c.d.s. transit and an AUG.25 Philippines registered receiver in purple. The cover is franked with two lavender 2c Map stamps plus a block of six of the ½c black Queen Victoria Numeral, all tied by Montreal roller cancels

 One of Two
Important Anglo-Boer War Map Stamp Items, this one being a cover, franked by a 2c Map stamp tied by a British Field Post Office No. 16 cancel dated JUL.28.1900. The cover was addressed to London (AUG.25.1900 first receiver) but then forwarded to
Ireland (Ballisodare Ireland receiver on back is dated AUG.27.1900). F.P.O. #16 was attached to the 19th Brigade of the 1st Division of the South African Field Force (S.A.F.F.). During the period of July 25-28 they were located at Bank Station,
Orange River Colony. During this same time period, the 19th Brigade of the 9th Division, which included the 2nd Royal Canadian Regiment, was also located at Bank Station, therefore it is likely a Canadian attached to this force that sent this letter.
Rowe (1981) illustrates two covers mailed from South Africa with Canadian stamps attached. However these were superfluous as they did not pay the postage. The Imperial Penny postage stamp on this cover appears to have been accepted for payment of the
postage. Vertical fold, still very fine and rare. Ex. Eugene Scott and accompanied by a copy of an email to the owner from well known Boer War expert Peter Prime explaining the legitimacy of this cover. (Scan a)

 One of Two
Important Anglo-Boer War Map Stamp Items, this one being an octagonal Ficksburg O.V.S. (Orange Free State) cancel (a "cousin" of the squared circle cancel) on a 2c Map stamp, dated JUL.17.1900. There was an important battle in Ficksburg between
July 23 and 30, 1900 and it is possible a Canadian soldier was in the area at the time and had used this stamp to a letter back home. A rare and unique cancel on this stamp.

Perforated Imperial Penny Postage Map Stamp, perforated with what appears to be part of the letter "P" which, when overlaid on the accompanying cheque, lines up with the P of its "PAID" perforation. The stamp also has manuscript writing reading
"nts" which may stand for "cents" and part of a signature below it. There is also a trace of a blue cancel at bottom left, which might be part of a bank datestamp. An interesting item, as postage stamps have been known to be used for revenue

Orb, flags, Toronto streets, etc. Also includes some advertising, and unchecked by us for shade or plate varieties. We also note a 2c stationery cover uprated by a 2c Map and 1c Numeral addressed to Calais France (receiver on front), but missing one
or more stamps. An 1899 #10 OHMS cover with two different shades 2c Map paying the double weight rate to Vermont. Finally, a special commemorative cover mailed on December 15, 1928, the 30th Anniversary of the Imperial Penny Post rate, Toronto to

Lithographed Forgeries, with an imperforate and a perforated stamp, plus a genuine for comparison. A fairly crude forgery, with no shading lines behind CANADA POSTAGE and thinner than should be letters WE HOLD and numeral 2s. Also the postmark
"MONTREAL 24/12/98" is lithographed at the same time and thus always in exactly the same position on these. The imperforate stamp has a thin and the perforated one has slight perf toning. (Scan a)

 Fake First
Day Cover, a large-sized cover franked with a block of four, each stamp with "Mulock" signature in blue, tied and cancelled by "Montreal & Toronto R.P.O. c.d.s. cancels dated "8 / DE 7 / 1898". This cancel was not in use until 1918, and so
someone would have changed the "18" (year date) to "1898". The "8" time mark was also not used as this would have used directional time marks instead. Still an interesting item, accompanied by a (pink) 1990 Greene Certificate boldly stating "... the
entire cover including signatures is a fabrication". Also comes with a fabricated "registered" cover, once mailed at a domestic 2c rate, but with two Map stamps added later, plus a 2c Leaf making 8c, with fake R in oval cancels, etc. (Scan a)

two 1898 "Mulready Covers" each reading "Christmas Day 1898" at bottom and franked with a 2c Map stamp, tied by a (dubious) BERLIN / ONT DE 25 / 98 c.d.s. cancel, with additional strikes on back. The pale green cover is unaddressed and the pink
one is (crudely) addressed to "Rev. James L. Black / Berlin Ont." (with small tear at bottom repaired with tape). An article in the October 1977 Maple Leaves reports that these were produced by the Peterborough Review Printing and Publishing
Co. (Ltd.) to commemorate the inauguration of the Imperial Penny Postage and were inspired by the Mulready envelopes of 1840. R.B. Winmill in his book The Evolution of the Penny Postage and The Postal History of the Canadian 1898 Map Stamp
states that "Unaddressed De 25 98 covers are at best philatelic, but more probably are outright fakes". We agree that the postmarks on these could be fakes, but there are a number of these exact same covers mailed (from Peterborough) to England or
Ireland, and these just happen not to have been mailed. Non the less an interesting conversation duo. (Scan a)
