401 CVR   imageDecember 25, 1898 Pink Unaddressed "Mulready" Cover, reading "Christmas Day 1898" at bottom and franked with a 2c Map stamp, tied by a (dubious) BERLIN / ONT DE 25 / 98 c.d.s. cancel, with an additional strike on back. An article in the October 1977 Maple Leaves reports that these were produced by the Peterborough Review Printing and Publishing Co. (Ltd.) to commemorate the inauguration of the Imperial Penny Postage and were inspired by the Mulready envelopes of 1840. R.B. Winmill in his book The Evolution of the Penny Postage and The Postal History of the Canadian 1898 Map Stamp states that "Unaddressed De 25 98 covers are at best philatelic, but more probably are outright fakes". We agree that the postmarks on these could be fakes, but there are a number of these exact same covers mailed (from Peterborough) to England or Ireland, and these just happen not to have been mailed. 402   image1899 Sir William Mulock Letter, written on February 3rd in Ottawa on official Canada Postmaster General letterhead to the Head Master at the Training College, in London England. The letter is thanking the students of the school for saying "how much they like the new Canadian stamp". In the letter, Mulock points out the importance of the geography shown (the size of the Empire and the size of Canada in relation to the Empire and the world as a whole). Mulock also mentions the source of the quotation "We hold a vaster Empire than has been". He finishes by saying that Canada "may yet be the home of some of them". 403   imageJuly 30, 1898 Page from the "Graphic" Magazine, depicting a photograph of the ten men forming the "Imperial Penny Postage: The Organizing Committee of the Conference", including Muloch [sic]. The caption reads: "The Imperial Conference on postal rates agreed, on the proposal of the representative of the Dominion of Canada, that letter postage of one penny per half-ounce should be established between the United Kingdom, Canada, Newfoundland, the Cape Colony, and Natal, and such of the Crown Colonies as may, with the approval of Her Majesty's Government, be willing to adopt it. This beginning of Imperial penny postage will come into force, it is said, on the Prince of Wale's birthday, November 9.". Also contains a few other articles, and the other side contains a series of desert-themed cartoons. (Scan a) Est $ 75

404   imageFirst Day of Issue (in Ottawa) of the Deep Blue Green Shade, being a Department of the Interior memorandum, dated Ottawa December 20, 1898, dating the release (at least in Ottawa) of this deep blue green shade. This would support A. Holmes' statement that the deep blue green printing was later than the lavender oceans. The memo reads: "You will notice the difference in colour of the Sea in the new edition of stamp placed on sale in Ottawa today. It is a great improvement I think. The splashes of Red were seen to be more carefully laid on, but the perforation was carelessly done! i.e. the centering of the stamp is defective". An important piece for the specialist. 406   image1899 Industrial Exhibition Association of Toronto Medal, with detailed and well defined relief impression, depicting on front a postal carrier superimposed over the 1898 Map stamp, with the words IMPERIAL PENNY POSTAGE and the year 1899. The reverse reads INDUSTRIAL EXHIBITION ASSOCIATION OF TORONTO and depicts an elaborate coat of arms with two beavers, etc. This medal appears to be made of pewter or aluminum alloy, and could have been a proof used to produce the 3 gold, 66 silver and 33 bronze medals awarded at the Exhibition. We have only ever seen two others, both in the Fawn collection (in bronze and in alloy). These were written-up in Medals and Tokens of Industrial Exhibition Association of Toronto written by Norman E. Wells. Extremely rare and a wonderful collateral piece for a serious Map collection. 407   imageImperial Penny Postage Fraternal Greeting Card, produced by John Ross Robertson (a friend of William Mulock) to commemorate the inauguration of the Imperial Penny Postage scheme. The thick card has a Map stamp affixed to it, as well as a detailed description of the scheme, a dedication to "the Members of the United Grand Lodge of Free Masons of England...", etc. One of these was inserted in the well known first letter mailed at the new 2c domestic letter rate at the Toronto Post Office by Robertson. Several creases, still scarce and a must have for the serious Map stamp collector. (Scan a) Est $ 150

408   imageGroup of Cinderellas or Labels, on two exhibit pages, starting with a "THE S.P.G. WORLD" at top of a remarkably similar perforated label to the Map stamp, with "UPON WHICH THE SUN NEVER SETS" at bottom, produced by the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel. The Fawn collection had one which was described as the only one known, which sold for US$475 plus fees. Also a "LADY MINTO'S FETE" with a similar design, showing a red map of India, produced in January 1907. Also a "PAN-AMERICAN EXPOSITION" label depicting a similar world map, produced in December 1899 to advertise the Pan-American Expositions in Buffalo in 1901. They produced 5 designs, one of which (this one) bore a resemblance to the Map stamp. Also a copy of this stamp tied to a lovely March 1901 illustrated advertising cover (Chicago to Boston) for the German American Provision Co., depicting two hogs. Each label is well described by the exhibitor, and has a mint 2c Canadian Map stamp next to it for comparison. An interesting and useful lot for the Map stamp collector.
