4343 image1867 Issue "Sellschopp" Imitations Assortment, six singles and two blocks in a variety of colors, fresh and Very Fine, these items were first reported in 1936rnWilhelm Sellschopp established himself as a philatelic dealer and auctioneer in Hamburg, Germany in the late 19th century. He also operated an outlet in San Francisco where in addition to buying and selling stamps, he published stamp catalogs and booklets. In "Egypt, Stamps and Postal History" (1999), Peter Smith suggests these imitations were produced in the US and not Germany and possibly not by Mr Sellschopp. (Image 1)

The French Consulate, situated close to the Old City, was oftentimes in a "no-man's land". A mail system was arranged by the French Consul, Rene Neuville, whereby mail deposited at the consulate would be driven by automobile to Amman, flown to Beirut and then on to France. He used postage and consular stamps he had on hand to frank the mail though this was not approved by the French government. There was some confusion when the mail arrived in France and few covers are known to have travelled this route. Leftover unused stamps were sold later by M. Neuville.rn (Image 1)
