1898 Rare
Blockade cover from the USS Charleston off Manila, Philippines sent via Hong Kong. Manuscript “Ship’s Letter / “U.S.S. Charleston” at upper left, and dispatched by US Navy ship to Hong Kong, then turned
over to the U.S. Consulate for mailing. Franked with Hong Kong 10c QV ( ) with Hong Kong / D / JY 8 / 98 postmark. Sent to Williamsburg, VA and forwarded to Millboro Springs. (During the Spanish-American War, the USS Charleston convoyed troop
transports to the Philippines, capturing the island of Guam while en route, and took part in final operations against Manila. While operating north of Luzon on November 2, 1899, she was wrecked on an uncharted reef.) (Supposedly less than
five covers recorded via this route to Hong Kong.) The Philippine blockade period was from May 1 to July 16, 1898. After July 31, 1898 the military post office in the Philippines was established, and mail via HK is non-existent. An extremely
