Of the 16 recorded examples from Philadelphia, this is the only known item in blue. During the period 1902-1908, epidemics of smallpox occurred quite frequently in Pennsylvania, including several in Philadelphia. During this time period, letters would be placed in a wooden box with a tightly fitted lid, and the letters would be placed inside, sprinkled with formalin (a 40% solution of formaldehyde) and left for about three hours. From 20 Aug to 23 Oct 1895, a quarantine was imposed on certain areas in the Hawaiian Islands due to a cholera epidemic and all mail leaving the islands was fumigated by the Honolulu post office. The rate was 15 cents and includes a one cent overpayment of the registry fee. This cover was also disinfected in transit at Angel Island in San Francisco Bay, ,with multiple transit strikes, ,Rare attractive six-color franking and one of the rarest destinations for Hawaiian disinfected mail, Very Fine. , Ex-Honolulu Advertiser collection (Image 1) 3,000-4,000
