(MAY.8 transit). The 9c double weight registered rate was paid using a 2c SQ, 2c RLS and 5c RLS stamps, very fine and unusual franking / usage of these stamps in 1909. Very fine and a particularly nice example of this shade / franking / rate. 127	CVR	37	1878 3c Small Queen on Registered Drop Letter, Contrary to Regulations, a cover with an oval Toronto return address handstamp mailed to and from Toronto on MAR.5.1878 (broken circle free strike) and franked with a very fine 3c red Small Queen, tied by a "REGISTERED" handstamp, paying the 1c drop letter plus 2c registration rate. This was mailed in the period (OCT.1.1876 to MAY.8.1889) where it was compulsory to use Registration stamps to pay for registration charges. Tears on back and cut down at right, still a nice example showing this scarce illegal franking.
