First Flight Covers, with 114 covers in all, each with a CL46 stamp on front or back (6 covers are double-franked) with various flights (includes duplication of some), described by owner using the AAMC catalogue numbers. 8 covers are pilot signed / handstamped and a quick glance revealed some stamp varieties CL46a (x7), CL46i (x9) and at least one of CL46ii, these all counted as normal stamps. 287 CVR   image1939 (June 8) Proof Strike of the Royal Train Machine Cancel, three strikes on an index card (15 x 9 cm) with two superimposed strikes plus another perfect single strike. This is still in its original mailing envelope sent to the Royal Train Postmaster’s son in Ottawa (Roderick Ross) with the same machine cancel, but this one ideally dated June 12, 1939 (which happens to be one of the rarest Royal Train dates, with very few known). Also 7 unaddressed #10 size “Royal Train / Canada” stationery envelopes each with a purple Royal Train c.d.s. in French (each dated May 15, TM 22), each envelope also with a “Maitre de poste / Train royal” two-line handstamp in purple. 289   image1939 Royal Train Postmaster Arm Band, in red and blue silk material, reading “ROYAL VISIT / 2900 / POSTAL”, with a white logo inside reading "SHOLDEN LTD. / OTTAWA AND HULL”. A very rare item, which was worn by G.W. Ross, the Royal Train’s Postmaster. He can be seen wearing it in an original photograph taken inside the Post Office car of the train (faulty, but included with the armband) which is also shown on page 122 of “Just Perfect” by Morris / Payne. 291   image1938 (May 15) Royal Train Proof Machine Impression, in purple on a 15x 9 cm index card, with the hub reading "OTTAWA / ONT. MAY 15 / 10 AM / 1938” (the incorrect year date was apparently done on purpose) and the straight-line obliterator reads “RAILWAY / MAIL / SERVICE”. Corner creases at left and light edge wear, else very fine. Only three are known, a rare opportunity for the Royal Train enthusiast. Ex Major G.W. Ross estate.

292   imageOriginal “Assignment of Rooms” Folder Given to the 1939 Royal Train Postmaster, a folder printed by the Empress Hotel in Victoria BC showing a map of the three floors assigned to accommodate “The Royal Party" traveling on the Royal Train, including their room numbers. For example, the Rt. Hon. W.L. Mackenzie King was assigned Suite 230, the Royal Train Postmaster Major G.W. Ross to his son Roderick in Ottawa, reading “On Board Pilot Train / Dear Roddy, here we are speeding west after having finished the Port Arthur - Fort Williams Reception. Her Majesty had a chat with a woman (Indian) with a papoose on her back when we stopped at White River. Hope you are well, your aff. Father, Daddy”. Written on May 23 at 5:35 pm and mailed (postmarked) on the same day at 10pm (TM 22), with the original “Royal Train” stationery envelope included (signed by Postmaster), very fine and interesting. 294   imageThree 1939 Royal Train Menus, two depicting a watercolour painting of the Royal Train in blue, inside of which is a menu (with prices, in both official languages) printed on MAY.11.1939 (bottom left). The third has the same interior but depicts "The National Memorial, Ottawa" on front. Since this was in the possession of G.W. Ross we think these might have been a menu used in the Pilot Train, as the Royal Train’s menus had no prices. These were also used on other C.P.R. trains in this period. Ross, the 1939 Royal Train Postmaster, all these items have something to do with the 1939 Royal Train and Their Majesty's visit, includes 10 photographs (one colourized rest black and white), three of which are signed on back "R. Létourneau / 18/5/1939 / Québec", also a printed folder on how to identify the various armbands during the visit marked "This is for the confidential information of the police", a U.S. Department of State "Special Permission" card for Ross, giving him permission to "Leave platform 17-18 Union Station after arrival of the Royal Train June 8", a "Cadbury Medal", two brass commemorative coins, a "Royal Train" bag tag for "Car 2, Office", a parcel wrapper addressed to Major Ross aboard the Royal Train (mailed from Edmonton, with no receiver), a 7-page firsthand account of the visit entitled "A few notes on incidents occurring the visit of North America of Their Majesties...." and some interesting correspondence, including a letter sent to Ross from Harrisburg US in Dec. 1939 by someone sending him a photograph taken of Ross, a letter mailed JUN.15.1939 by Ross to his son in Ottawa, a letter written by a collector in 1960 to Ross thanking him for info on R.T. stationery and asking if he's got more, a letter from a collector to Ross dated JUN.5.1939 asking for postmark information and a few more items.
