Second Remainder Lot
from the Estate of G.W. Ross, the 1939 Royal Train Postmaster, containing all things not related to the Royal Train, but rather interesting things from the estate of Col. Ross. We saw a Post Office Department "temporary withdrawal from the Post
Office to enter the ranks of the Overseas Forces..." document dated 1916 (with an accompanying letter), a leather "Post Office Department photo id from 1947, another Postmaster General official letter dated 1922, a 1926 book titled "Formal Modes of
Addressing Titled and Distinguished Personages with Examples of Superscription, Commencement and Termination of Letters" signed by Ross with the Railway Mail Service handstamp, three articles on G.W. Ross (from "The Postmark", 1951-1954) and an
unpublished (?) monograph written by Ross in 1963 titled "Development of the Royal Canadian Air Force Postal Service in Canada and Overseas, 1940-1942" by Colonel G.W. Ross, O.B.E. V.D. Royal Canadian Postal Corps (Retired). Last but not least is a
stack of 1951 Royal Train covers he mailed to himself and a stack of 1929 first flight covers also mailed to himself or to his family in Ottawa. An interesting group.
Col. G. W. Ross, OBE, VRD (Ret’d) served in the Boer War with the 6th Battalion, Canadian Mounted Rifles, and later in both World Wars with the Canadian Army Postal Corps. Appointed Director of Railway Mail Services in 1929, he also served as
Postmaster on the 1939 Royal Train during the tour of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. He postponed his 1950 retirement to establish mail services for Canadian forces in Korea and for NATO deployments in Europe, capping a lifetime of distinguished
service. (Scan 1)
