Ungava, a 3c KGV Arch stamp tied by a circular grid cancel, with a SEP.2.1932 Lake Harbour N.W.T. free strike postmark on a cover to Ottawa, picked up by the S.S. Ungava on SEP.3.1932 (boxed datestamp in purple). Even if still unopened, we know that inside is a Christmas Greetings card from the Fourth Hussars of Canada, with their crest, sent by the 1939 Royal Train Postmaster (who was a member) to his son. 322 CVR   image1932 Pond Inlet Baffin Island to Ottawa, via the S.S. Ungava, a 3c KGV Arch is tied by a 27 (Aug.) 1932 Pond Inlet Baffin Island N.T. cancel (plus another free strike, both in purple) on a cover to Ottawa, picked up by the S.S. Ungava on AUG.28.1932 (boxed datestamp in purple). Inside is a Christmas Greetings card from the Fourth Hussars of Canada, with their crest, sent by the 1939 Royal Train Postmaster (who was a member) to his son. Read description of lot 318 above.

Prince Edward Island

324 CVR   image1798 Folded Letter Dealing with Early Developments of the Island of St. John (now Prince Edward Island), written by Thomas Hassard and addressed to “The Most Noble Marques of Townsend, Raynham Hall, Norfolk” with a faint but identifiable large circle in red “FREE / JY 10 98”, with a boxed “TOTHILL STREET WESTMR” on back next to a "London JY 10 98” double circle. The long two page letter inside is transcribed (see scan) and discusses a fascinating account of present (then) PEI, and is dated in the same year that the island changed its name to Prince Edward Island, not long after it became a British Colony (it was called "Ile St Jean" prior to that, and belonged to the French). Franked with a 6d and a pair of 2d Queen Victoria issues totaling 10d (a rate in effect only from June 1863 to July 1864). The cover would have traveled on the “Norman” from Sydney and on the “Carnatic” from Ceylon and the "Massilia” from Alexandria. 331 CVR 75, 77 image1869 Victoria 1sh6d Pre-U.P.U. Packet Rate Cover to the United States, mailed from Corop / Victoria on OCT.7.1869 to McMinnville Tennessee, via Rochester / Victoria (OCT.7 realist), Melbourne (OCT.8 transit), London (NOV.29 transit) and New York (DEC.11. transit). Franked with two 6d and three 2d Queen Victoria issues, each cancelled by #612” grid numerals, plus “2 / CENTS” and a “5” accountancy markings. Cover has contents reading in part “… I have not received a single line in reply, I sent letters both by the Panama route and the Overland Route by way of England. If you have never received them there is something decidedly wrong in the Mail Service, and to make matters sure I had my letters registered. I also sent a letter by ship last October or Nov. but she was unfortunately wrecked on the Coast of Africa…” and the better goes on, on the same subject for three pages. A good example showing how difficult it could be to mail letters that far in those days (this one took over 2 months). Cover front and back are separated, still very fine and scarce. Addressed to Glasgow, Scotland where it was received on SEP.13. It then received a "T / 15c" octagonal handstamp as well as a "3D F.B." (the "Post Card" printing was crossed-out) and finally a "Glasgow Returned Letter Branch" crowned oval in black dated OCT.4 and a Glasgow c.d.s. dated same day.
