This cover / card was mailed by the Royal Train Postmaster G.W. Ross (who was in the Fourth Hussars of Canada) to his son Stirling in Ottawa. The next four lots are covers that were mailed to his other son Roderick (4 of those are unopened and appear to contain the same greetings card). These 5 were consigned to us by the 1939 Royal Train Postmaster’s granddaughter, who also consigned some very interesting and unique material from the Royal Train Post Office (see our next general sale). Col. G. W. Ross, OBE, VRD (Ret’d) served in the Boer War with the 6th Battalion, Canadian Mounted Rifles, and later in both World Wars with the Canadian Army Postal Corps. Appointed Director of Railway Mail Services in 1929, he also served as Postmaster on the 1939 Royal Train during the tour of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. He postponed his 1950 retirement to establish mail services for Canadian forces in Korea and for NATO deployments in Europe, capping a lifetime of distinguished service.
