537 CVR 1 image1840 (Aug.12) Penny Black Folded Letter Mailed from Venezuela to England, mailed from Puerto Cabello, Venezuela on JUN.29.1840 (dateline inside) to Halifax, England and arrived in Liverpool on AUG.12.1840 (receiver in red) where it was taken over by a forwarding agent (boxed "FORWARDED BY / WM. ROSS & CO. / LIVERPOOL"), who added a 4-margin (close, to clear on one side) 1p black Queen Victoria imperforate adhesive (Plate 1b, position NH) tied by a red Maltese Cross cancel (same colour as the Liverpool receiver). A rare and desirable use of the Penny Black, in fact we have not found any similar examples except for one incoming from India which received similar treatment and was described at auction as one of three known (from India) and sold for U$9,300. This was the pride and joy of the owner, as it was given to him by a neighbour when he was a child. The neighbour had a family connection to the senders in Venezuela, and this is the first time it appears on the market.
