1113 CVR/PC   imageExhibit on the Special Usages of the Barrel Cancel Datestamps, 1955 to 1962, well written-up on 16 exhibit pages, showing the various ways in which barrel cancels were used, in a time where machine cancels did most of the work. These ways include ordinary domestic mail, airmail, wrappers, bulky envelopes (in this case one that contained photographs or film), large flat items, stamps that were not in the required "upper right corner", covers where the machine cancel missed one or more stamps, alongside postage due markings or frankings, directory service, registered mail, registration receipts, special delivery, bag tags, facing slips, favour cancels, first day covers, etc. We counted 33 items in the exhibit, plus another 17 items not yet written-up including an international reply coupon, letter bill, etc. Very fine. 1114 CVR/PC   imageExtensive Collection of Barrel Datestamps, 1955 to 1962, with 168 covers / cards (plus numerous others on piece or sometimes stamp, not counted), neatly written-up on quadrille pages (about 20 are not yet written-up), arranged chronologically. The collection appears to be missing only 3 postmarks, according to the attached Robert C. Smith checklist (with rarity factors), which makes for a 90 out of the 93 different known hammers. This does not include the 3 that have never been seen. According to this same list, 7 postmarks are only owned on stamp. Covers include all the usages that would normally receive barrels, such as special delivery, registered, misplaced stamps, first day covers, and more. A true labour of love which could be expanded or added to an existing collection. See pictures for a sampling. 1119 CVR   image1897 3c Jubilee Cover with "J in Lozenge" Cancel, mailed from Dungannon, Ontario on JUL.7.1897 (c.d.s. free-strike) to Toronto (same day receiver) through Goderich (same day squared circle transit) and franked with a 3c Jubilee, cancelled (but not tied) by a "J in Lozenge" identified as Lacelle 508, which may refer to the Dungannon Postmaster's name J. M. Roberts. Interestingly, Lacelle associates it as being from Bayfield, NS (mistake?). A letter to the editor in the July 2001 BNAPS newsletter reads "Joe Smith has a query regarding Lacelle 508. He would like to know if it is known on any issues other than the Jubilees. All strikes that I have seen have been on Jubilees, however late S.Q.'s were still in use in '98. He states that the location is "presumed to be “Dungannon Ont.", and refers to a P.H.S.C. illustration. Did I miss something here?". A lovely socked on the nose strike on a very fine cover.
