902 CVR/PC   imageCollection of Roughly 350 Switzerland Covers and Cards in 4 Albums, 1920s-1990s, containing mostly first day, event, and first flight covers. Just some of the better material we encountered includes roughly 40 first day covers with souvenir sheet frankings with Scott #s 242 (x5), B89 (x5), B132 (x2), B143, B144 (x2), B178, and #300 80c PAX first day cover. The lot also includes roughly 20 first flights from the 1920s noting a few with tied vignettes. The balance of the lot contains first day and first flight covers from the 1950s to the 1990s, noting singles, sets and souvenir sheet frankings, along with a few semi-postal usages. 903 CVR   imageGroup of 65 Switzerland Covers with Booklet Pane and Stamp Frankings, 1926-1985, with roughly half the covers ranging from the 1930s, in 18 double sided 2-row Vario-style stock pages, in a Lighthouse album. This interesting lot contains mostly domestic registered covers, along with a few to North America, with booklet pane and booklet stamp frankings, including se-tenant and tète-bêche pairs and strips. Just a few of the better booklet panes include Scott #s 159a (x4, c.v. $150 total), 160a (x7, $700 total), 161a ($125), along with an interesting usage of a se-tenant strip of 4 with Scott #s 159, 168 alongside a punched gutter strip. 904 CVR/PC   imageGroup of Roughly 75 Switzerland Flight Covers and Cards Relating to the 1939 Exposition, in 19 double sided 2-row Vario-style stock pages in a Lighthouse album. The lot begins with roughly 18 first flight covers, including a few round trip flights to Latvia and Sweden, each receiving a Zurich Pavillion and Swiss Air postmark, noting various air mail stamp frankings. The balance of the lot contains Exposition post cards, franked with singles, sets, and partial sets of the National Exposition Stamps from 1939 (noting all three different languages), and a few balloon flight covers. 905 PC   imageCollection of 195 Different Pro Infirmis Postcards of Switzerland, with a mix of mint and used, all neatly displayed in three deluxe Lighthouse albums with slipcases. Each card is sleeved, with the owner's description of date, type, used or unused, etc, and we note several cards that are present in up to three copies (making the grand total well over 200). A rare and very fine offering which is accompanied by "Catalogue of Pro Infirmis Postcards of Switzerland 1934-2000" by Richard T. Hall C.Ph.H. (in full colour) and another work in progress of the same, which start out with "The Pro Infirmis Foundation first issued postcards as a fund raising activity in 1934. It sent a set of illustrated cards to all households in the Canton of Zurich asking for a donation. As this effort was successful it was repeated the same year in ten other Cantons." 906 O   imageOld Time Collection of Used United States in an Album, 1847-1956, the album is in French and Dutch and starts off with a #1 (margins are clear to good), followed by #s 9, 11A (with New Orleans dated cancel), 12, 13, 24 (very fine, with "BALT. PAID" double circle cancel in blue), 26, 73, 65, 67, 68, 69 (straight edges), a good selection of 1870 and 1873 issues incl. a very fine #156 with DE 29 83 London UK receiver in red, and so on, noting #s 230-238, 285-291, 294-299 then probably 90% complete to the end for regular issues. Back of the book has lots of useful material, such as C1-C12, E1-E6, O83*, O85*, J1-J5, J22-J26, a group of 7 diff. Confederate issues, just to name a few. Saw a few straight edges and some stamps with light toning, unchecked by us for thins but some should be expected, overall fine to better. See our online photos for just some of the better pages. 910 CVR   imageCollection of U.S. Civil War Postal History and Correspondence, including 39 covers, 28 of which are patriotic illustrated. 13 of the covers are unused with different illustrations, and the rest were all mailed during the Civil War, except for 4 which date from the turn of the century, but are related. An important attribute to this collection is all the correspondence, which includes 5 letters still in their covers, plus another 26 letters, most of which having interesting content, some of which with transcriptions. Last but not least is a collection of 56 Civil War stamps, about one quarter of which are genuine. The covers range from faulty to very fine, unchecked by us for better postmarks, etc. The entire lot is pictured online, so please have a close look to get a good idea. A fascinating lot for the Civil War enthusiast or historian. The lot contains primarily commemorative and first day covers, celebrating United States achievements in space including Discovery, Atlantis, and Challenger space shuttle delivery and missions, including various deployments of communication satellites, and much more. 914 CVR   imageExtensive Collection of Over 100 Better Covers of the 1941-1944 Transport Airmail Issues, consisting of 43 covers written-up on pages, plus another 60 sleeved covers (incl. a few cards and letter cards), representing all of the values to the 50c, and essentially all of the airmail rates (up to the 80c rate, with many single frankings, etc.). This is a strong holding with a good variety of material including postage dues, return to sender with foreign stamps, double, triple etc. weights, many censored (single, double, triple) with tapes and/or handstamps, saw some Special Delivery and registered airmail, saw a private perfin, various military usages, prisoner of War mail, many instructional handstamps such as "Service Suspended...", "Service Unavailable", "Via airmail from Coast Onward to Destination", and much more. Another strength of this group is all of the destinations, noting mail having been sent to or from Hawaii, Midway Island, Canada, Mexico, Peru, Philippines, Venezuela, Paraguay, Argentina, Brazil, Jamaica, Canal Zone, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Italy, Switzerland, Israel, Lebanon, New Zealand, China (Shanghai, Hong Kong, etc.), Gold Coast, New Guinea, India, Penrhyn Island, Cameroun, Germany, Palestine, Greece, Suriname, Fiji, Solomon Islands, British Guiana, American Samoa, United Kingdom, Upper Silesia, Dutch New Guinea, Singapore, Barbados, Java (Indonesia), Belgian Congo and domestic. Comes with a photocopy of a 5 frame exhibit on the subject. This lot has not seen the light of day since the early 1990s, when it was put away in a storage unit - a wonderful opportunity to acquire such a fantastic group, overall fine to very fine. 915 PC 536 image1919 1c Green Washington First Day of Issue, a picture postcard datelined AUG.15.1919, franked with a 1c grey green Washington perforated 12½, tied by a Washington D.C. wavy line machine dated AUG.15.1919 (the first day of issue), predating the AUG.18.1919 "earliest documented use" noted in Scott Specialized. The stamp has light toning on its perfs, still a rare single usage and even rarer first day usage. Scott Specialized catalogue value for the stamp used alone on a postcard is $225. Steamship Service Covers, 1926-1952, a wonderful collection assembled over many decades and put away in 1993, all displayed in black Vario-style stock pages. We counted a total of 70 covers or cards that were mailed by the various United Fruit Co. steamships, as well as 26 picture postcards (some real photo) depicting various steamship from the line. Also included are two books on the subject "United Fruit Company / The History, Ships & Cancellations of the Great White Fleet" by Phillip Cockrill, and "Cruising the Caribbean in the Wake of Pirates", as well as 9 pamphlets, onboard menus, a bag tag, etc. Most of the covers were mailed on board, to or from the United States and Central / South America, noting mail to or from Colombia, Jamaica, Cuba, Guatemala, British Honduras, Costa Rica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Honduras, Canal Zone, etc. Includes owner's list of the ships owned by the company, with highlighted ones that are in the collection.
