Jamaica
LotNo. Symbol Cat No. Lot Description
882 O   imageExtensive (A to S) Collection of Jamaica Town Cancels on Stamp or on Stamp on Piece, with over 1,800 items (blocks and multiples counted as one), neatly displayed on pages filling a thick Scott Specialty album. Postmarks run from Aberdeen to Skibo, on stamps and pieces from the 1890s to about 1965. We note a good assortment of postmark types, with small and large c.d.s., small and large oval postmarks, serrated, double rings, black, purple and more. There is also a large representation of different towns, as each town is represented with between one and 4 items, with the average being one or two per town. Kingston however has 26, including registered, street letter box, paquebot, and branch offices. A very nice collection, and it is evident the collector would only settle for perfect strikes, with the majority of the "on stamp" strikes being socked on the nose. A unique opportunity for the specialist, or person wishing to continue the challenge. Scanned pages are representative only. 883 CVR   imageCollection of 58 Jamaica Stampless Covers, 1830-1855, with a few on either side of the range, displayed and annotated on album pages, noting several better items such as Spanishtown (1808 straight line), Savannah La Mar (straight line), Vere (in blue), 1860 OHMS from St Ann's Bay, numerous postmark types for Kingston, Green Island, Morant Bay, Mandeville, Mayhill, Clarendon, Port Morant, Montego Bay and others. Almost all items were mailed to England or Scotland and some of the letter contents were transcribed by typewriter. Many faults and partial strikes as expected, still many items that are fine to very fine and a rarely offered group. This collection was written-up and owned by Bob Topaz, a well known Jamaican postal history authority, and was sold to the current owner in a 1996 British Caribbean Philatelic Study Group auction where it was described as being out of circulation since the last 30 years (now making it almost 60 years). It had a U$300 estimate and sold for U$625. We only scanned a small portion of the lot.
