(Baffin Island) to the United States, mailed at Pangirtung N.W.T. on AUG.22.1926 (broken circle postmark on back is earlier than reported in O'Reilly), with JUL.10.1927 Ponds Inlet Baffin Island N.T. broken circle postmark in blue next to a 2c Admiral, tied by a circular grid also in blue. The cover was carried by the S.S. Beothic to North Sydney, Nova Scotia arriving on SEP.4, then Ottawa on SEP.9 (1927 Confederation illustrated slogan machine on back), then on to final destination. Both N.W.T. postmarks are very early for this area, and 1926 may even be the earliest of all. Rare and very fine. (Scan 1) (Scan 2) (All Scans)

782 PC   image1929 Dundas Harbour N.W.T. to the United States, a picture postcard mailed Dundas Harbour (Devon Island) on AUG.3.1929 (earlier than reported in O'Reilly), carried to North Sydney Nova Scotia on the S.S. Beothic. The picture side shows a map of the North, with an arrow pointing to the place this was mailed. The owner writes that at the time, this was the northernmost post office in the world. Beothic in Newfoundland to England; 1913 stationery card Nain Newfoundland Moravian Missionary to Germany; 1930 5c U.P.U. card mailed Bache Peninsula N.W.T. to California; and 1931 2c Admiral cover Dundas Harbour N.W.T. to the United States with "2" due handstamp. 784 CVR   image1932 Cartwright Labrador to England, via S.S. Ungava, with Cartwright Lab / Newf'd "JUL / 32" broken circle free strike, picked up by the S.S. Ungava on JUL.15.1932 (boxed datestamp ties stamp) to St John's, and then England. Creases and tears, still a scarce cover.

785 CVR   image1932 Port Burwell to Alberta, via S.S. Ungava, a Hudson's Bay Company cover picked up by the S.S. Ungava on SEP.9.1932 (boxed datestamp ties stamp) on its way from Godhavn, Greenland to Port Burwell, N.W.T. O'Reilly's list has a gap between SEP.7 and SEP.10 and the owner described SEP.9 as being the latest date of this cancel. The addressee is the wife of Captain Thomas Smellie, illustrated in Eastern Arctic Mail Service by John R. Thomson, very fine. This cancel was only used during the Arctic Patrol in 1932.

786 CVR   image1932 Incoming from Godhavn, Greenland to Montréal, via S.S. Ungava, carried by the S.S. Ungava with SEP.7.1932 boxed datestamp tying the stamp. For some reason, the owner's exhibit write-up (see scan online) does not mention the SEP.27.1932 Greenland postmark, which we cannot explain. A very fine cover also showing a purple crown cachet reading "Kolonien / Godhavn".

787 CVR   image1933 Pangnirtung, Baffin Island to Scotland, via S.S. Nascopie, picked up by the S.S. Nascopie on SEP.18.1933 and entered the mail in St John's on SEP.18 (machine cancel on back). Mr. J. Blackwell was employed by the Hudson's Bay Company at its fur trading post in Pangnirtung as post manager, and this letter is to a member of his family "back home". Nascopie, July 8 is the earliest reported date for this boxed cancel, applied on the day the icebreaker left the Montréal shore on its way to its first Arctic patrol. Addressed to Captain Thomas Smellie's daughter Yvonne in Edmonton, with the usual faults for this correspondence, fine and a desirable date.

790 CVR   image1933 Charlton Island (James Bay) to Edmonton, via S.S. Nascopie, the cover boarded ship while at Charlton Island on AUG.7.1933 (boxed handstamp ties stamp) and went to Moosenee (AUG.10 c.d.s. backstamp) by the HBC schooner S.S. Churchill, then by railway to North Bay, and onto Edmonton. Addressed to Captain Thomas Smellie's daughter Yvonne, with the usual faults for this correspondence, fine and a desirable route. 791 CVR   image1933 Bache Peninsula Last Day Postmark via S.S. Nascopie, dated APR.22.1933, franked with a provisional 3c on 2c Arch issue and addressed to Montréal, with boxed S.S. Nascopie on back dated SEP.7.1933, alongside a St John's SEP.28 transit slogan machine cancel. An interesting cover, described by the owner as "carried overland to Craig Harbour in the Spring of 1933, Corporal Stallworth of the R.C.M.P. (postmaster) carried his mail and equipment and postmarked all his mail on April 12th. This p.o. sold only $12,46 worth of stamps from its opening in 1926 to 1933 when it closed". Very fine. 792 CVR   image1934 Montréal and St John's Covers to Cartwright, Labrador, via S.S. Nascopie, first mailed Montréal on JUL.6.1934 (machine cancel ties 3c Cartier's Arrival stamp) and embarked S.S. Nascopie on the following day (with boxed cancel in green, the only one in this collection) on the first day of its 1934 patrol. Second cover boarded the S.S. Nascopie on JUL.12.1934 (free strike), with additional JUL.13 strike tying the Canadian and Newfoundland stamps. Both covers addressed to Mr. J. Blackhall, an H.B.C. employee (chief trader) who was transferred to Cartwright from Pangnirtung, Baffin Island. Bit of foxing (especially around stamps) else both fine. (Scan 1) (Scan 2) (All Scans)

Nascopie, mailed AUG.20.1934 on board while the icebreaker was in port at Churchill, Manitoba, addressed to Captain Smellie's wife, who was in the process of moving to Winnipeg, with Winnipeg Station R receivers dated AUG.24.1934. Opening faults as is with most of the Smellie correspondence, else very fine.

797 CVR   image1935 Craig Harbour N.W.T. Registered to British Columbia, via the R.M.S. Nascopie, mailed from D.A. Nichols, G.S.C. at the Hudson's Bay Co. in Craig Harbour, Ellesmere Island on SEP.8.1935 to Barkerville, BC, with an undated R.M.S. Nascopie boxed postmark in red (the ship was at Craig Harbour on SEP.8, leaving for Dundas Harbour N.W.T. on SEP.9). Travelled though Halifax (SEP.28), Toronto & Fort William RPO (OCT.1), Calgary & Vancouver RPO (OCT.3), Vancouver (OCT.4), and finally Barkerville BC (OCT.8). The H.B.C. letterhead letter inside reads in part "Greetings from the most northerly P.O. in the Empire and the second most northerly in the world". Very fine. (Scan 1) (Scan 2) (Scan 3) (All Scans)

798 PC   image1935 Real Photo Postcard Craig Harbour N.W.T. to Toronto, the picture side depicts the R.M.S. Nascopie, annotated "R.M.S. Nascopie in the Polar Pack". This card was mailed on board, on its way to Craig Harbour, but the ship never able to tie up due to ice blockage, and so was carried to Craig Harbour by special messenger. SEP.8.1935 c.d.s. from Craig Harbour, which could have been backdated by one day, as the 1st Officer's log book indicates cargo was unloaded by boat on SEP.9. Very fine, illustrated in Eastern Arctic Mail Service by John R. Thomson.

799 PC   image1935 Herschel Island, Yukon to Coppermine N.W.T., then Washington, a 2c KGV Arch sepia card depicting Bracebridge mailed from Herschel Island (AUG.10.1935 c.d.s. in blue is fuzzy, but readable. The message is signed by Henry Larson (Captain of the St Roch, a R.C.M.P. Schooner). The card was carried on the St Roch from Herschel Island to Coppermine N.W.T. then by air to Fort McMurray, Alberta then by rail the rest of the way. Very fine and rare.

800 CVR   image1935 Ponds Inlet Baffin Island N.W.T. to Montréal, via R.M.S. Nascopie, a larger O.H.M.S cover franked with a single 10c Mountie mailed on SEP.12.1935, with undated R.M.S. Nascopie handstamp in red. The envelope is a "Department of Marine / From Canadian Government Steamer..." signed N.B. McLean. The R.M.S. Nacopie was in Pond Inlet from SEP.12 to 14. Very fine.
