736 CVR/PC   image85 Page Exhibit of the Henry Morgan Correspondence "The Morgan Letters 1859-1911", the exhibit follows the life of this well known (to Canadian postal historians) author Henry J. Morgan, by showing correspondence sent to him, by whom, with context. The exhibit includes 148 covers (incl. a few cards), 42 of which still have their original letters inside, some quite long, includes some illustrated letterheads, etc.). These letters were mailed to Morgan from all over the country, plus from the United States, France, England and Japan, and we note a good range of postal history interest, such as postmarks (noted squared circles, cork cancels, an 1880 unofficial Toronto duplex, etc.), frankings, several double-weight rates, drop letter, stampless, mourning covers, registered mail including 4 registered Small Queen covers with 2c RLS stamps, and much more. Of note also are several free-franked covers (when mailed during the house sittings, or by people with franking privileges), as he was a federal government employee. The people who sent mail to Morgan included his son, daughter, sister, wife Nemmie, as well as many well known Canadians (including government officials), as Morgan was publishing early versions of what would later become the Who's Who in Canada. For example, we note a letter mailed by Lord Palmerston, British Prime Minister, mailed from 10 Downing Street. Also included with the lot is a binder containing 38 letters to Morgan (mostly 1870s-90s, some quite extensive) without their envelopes, although some covers in the exhibit might match up. Last but not least, we include 60 early postal cards also mailed to Morgan, from many places in Canada including a few from the United States. Reading all the letters in this lot offers tons of interesting historical content. A great lot for historians, postal historians or postal history dealers alike, please see our several photos online for a small glimpse into this rare offering.
