962 CVR 40 image1877 Harbor Grace to Saint Pierre & Miquelon, mailed on OCT.22.1877 to St Pierre (OCT.31 receiver on front as well as manuscript note of the same date on back) through St John's (OCT.22), carried from St John's to St Pierre by the Coastal West steamer S.S. Curlew (endorsed as such on back) franked with a pair of the 3c blue rouletted Queen Victoria, paying the 6c rate. Between 1874 and 1879 the rate to St Pierre was the same as the domestic rate of 6c), very fine. A rare cover, and one of only 8 reported paying the 6c rate to St Pierre, and the only cover known with this franking.

964 CVR 55 image1897 Cover to Switzerland, Conveyed by Royal Navy Ship, mailed St John's on OCT.27.1897 to Geneva, Switzerland (NOV.10 receiver), though Devonport (NOV.8 backstamp), carried by S.S. Tartar to Devonport (a.k.a. Plymouth Dock, a British naval base and the home port for this ship). Franked with a 5c Harp Seal, paying the 5c U.P.U. rate to the United Kingdom. Stains under stamp and on back, with opening tear at top, still a very scarce example of mail conveyed by a Royal Navy Vessel (see owner's write-up showing copies of newspaper ads announcing this special trip).

965 CVR 60, 67 image1899 Boer War Cover Mailed to South Africa, with "Mail Service Suspended" Marking, mailed from Bay Islands on SEP.21.1899 to Transvaal, South Africa, carried by train to St John's (SEP.22 backstamp), then carried by the Allan Line steamer S.S. Siberian to Liverpool, then onwards, but because mail service to South Africa was suspended (South African boxed handstamp on front), it was sent back to England, and then to Newfoundland via the Allan Line S.S. Corean, arriving back on JUL.16.1900. Back shows a JAN.29.1900 "Returned Letter Office Capetown" c.d.s. in red, and a boxed "Dead Letter Office St John's NF" dated JUL.18.1900 (the new earliest recorded date for this). Franked with an 8c and a 3c, overpaying the double weight rate by 1c. Very fine and rare.

966 CVR 81 image1898 2c Soldier's or Seamen's Letter to England, an envelope endorsed "from J.T. Corsam, Petty Officer 1st Class aboard H.M.S. Pelican, St George's Bay" with commanding Officer's initials at lower left. Postmarked Bay Island on OCT.17.1898 and carried by rail from the west coast of NL to St John's for onward transit via the S.S. Acadian to Dorset, England, with backstamp "N.N. & W. Railway T.P.O." (Oct. 17) and Teignmouth (OCT.29) and franked with a 2c orange King Edward VII issue paying the Seamen's and/or Soldier's rate. The letter was mailed while Corsam while on Royal Navy fisheries patrol on the "French Shore" (i.e. west coast) of NL. Very fine and rare, as Pratt recorded only four covers bearing a Newfoundland stamp (this, a fifth), and this is one of only two recorded Pelican covers.

The group is strongest in the 1865-1890 era, and includes many issues such as Scott #s 25 ($450), 26 ($275), 27 (x6, $50 each), 28/29 (x5, $45 ea.), 30 (x9, $115 ea.), 37 (x4, $52 ea.)38 (x6, $52 ea.) and many more. The postmarks are mostly corks of various designs, some quite detailed and / or well centered. We also note other postmarks such as "235" in oval grid, a "VOL" (S.S. Volunteer), at least two intaglio "W" corks, "PAID 5" and other rate markings, a page of foreign cancels on NL stamps as well as a few grids, some hand made. A wonderful and a rare opportunity for the Newfoundland postmark (especially cork) enthusiast. All pages scanned online. 973 CVR   imageAccumulation of Roughly 3,500 Covers and Postal Stationery with Newfoundland Postmarks, 1969-1971, in 8 shoe boxes, with roughly 2,500 covers single-franked with 6c orange Centennial stamp (Unitrade #459), and roughly 1,000 postal stationery covers with printed 6c orange Centennial, all appearing to be addressed to Gander, Newfoundland. There appears to be town postmarks from A to W, as well as many different types of postmarks within, including broken circles, c.d.s., duplex, MOON, a few slogans, etc. There are too many post offices of note to list here, but some of the colourful town names include Aspen Cove, Greens Pond, Joe Batt's Arm, Wesleyville B.B., etc. Expect some duplication, generally ranging from 5 to 20 and up for some towns. A nice lot for the Newfoundland collector, with an ideal stamp to showcase any postmark, online photo showing an overview of two of the boxes. The covers are singly franked noting 14 different issues, with Unitrade #s (includes approximate number of covers for each issue) 501 (x400), 503 (x800), 507 (x500), 512 (x750), 515 (x500), 516 (x500), 517 (x500), 518 (x400), 524-528 (x500 in total), 531 (x200).
