941 CVR 34 image1876 Channell to Boston 6c Rate, mailed on MAY.29.1876 ("fleuron" type c.d.s.) to Boston, Massachusetts with a JUN.23 receiver on front, through St John's (JUN.10 and JUN.12 backstamps), carried from Channell to St Johns on the S.S. Tiger (Coastal West mail), then to destination by the Allan Line steamer S.S. Sardinian. Franked with two 3c blue Queen Victoria issues, paying the short-lived (1872-1876) 6c rate to the United States. Upper right corner cut off, still rare, as it is one of only 4 covers paying this rate to the United States.

942 CVR 35 image6c Dull Rose on 1874 Cover to the United States, mailed from Channell on DEC.17.1874 ("fleuron" backstamp) to Marble Head, Massachusetts, carried by Coastal West vessel to North Sydney (DEC.18 backstamp) through Halifax (DEC.21 backstamp) and Boston (DEC.23 backstamp). Franked with a 6c dull rose Queen Victoria, tied by a small oval grid cancel, paying the 6c United States rate. Very fine. This is the only known direct cross-gulf cover from the west coast of NL during the ABNC period, and one of only 5 covers recorded paying the short-lived (1872-1876) 6c rate to the United States.

945 CVR 58 image½c Black Newfoundland Dog Multiple Franking on Cover to the United States, mailed Halls Bay R.T.P.O. on APR.21.1896 to Brooklyn, New York, carried by rail from La Manche (backstamp) to St John's (backstamp), then by S.S. Capulet to Brooklyn (APR.28 receivers). Franked with 20 (block of 10, strip of 4, pair, and block of 4 on back) paying the 10c rate. Cover has two vertical creases (which appear to be underneath the stamps) and stamps on back toned, still a remarkable franking.

Prowse (an early historian of Newfoundland in St John's on DEC.24.1901 (duplex) to Doubleday Publishers in New York City, franked with a single ½c Royal Family issue, paying the presumed "manuscript" rate. Light staining, still the only recorded such usage.

951 CVR   image1846 Stampless Folded Letter to England, mailed from Newfoundland on JUN.23.1846 to Waterford, England, with JUL.16 receiver, through London (JUL.15). The long, 3-page letter inside is datelined "Placentia, 6th June 1846 / via St John…" and discusses fishing and names many vessels and their location, etc. Very fine and a nice example of early Newfoundland stampless mail.

952 CVR   image1852 Stampless Folded Letter to Oporto, Portugal, mailed by fish merchants Newman & Co. in St John's by favour, with octagonal "Barras do Oporto / 25 / 10 / 1852" marking in blue as well as a "160" handstamp in blue denoting 160 reis charged for local delivery, plus another oval marking in same colour. The letter inside speaks of fish deliveries to Europe and the United States, and the writer says in part "We do not remember having seen so much ___ fish for several years as there is in this place now". Very fine.

953 CVR 24, 32A image1871 St Pierre to Harbor Grace, addressed to Harbor Grace, with NOV.7.1871 receiver, carried from St Pierre to St John's by the Coastal West steamer S.S. Walrus (also endorsed as such), arriving St John's on Nov.4 (backstamp), franked with a 2c green Cod Fish and 1c brown violet Prince of Wales, paying the 3c domestic rate (between 1871 and 1873, the rate to St Pierre was treated at the domestic rate). The cover is addressed in the distinct handwriting of Horatio Watts, who was at the time stationed at a St Pierre trading house. Reduced at right and repaired corner, still rare, being one of only 15 reported covers paying the 3c rate to/from Saint Pierre & Miquelon.

954 CVR 28 image12c Pale Red Brown Queen Victoria on an 1869 Cover to England, mailed St John's on NOV.25.1869 to Poole, England (DEC.13 receiver on back), with a red Liverpool Packet transit dated DEC.12. The cover is franked with a 12c Queen Victoria (first printing, tied by great strike of an outer ring quartered cork) paying the 1865-1872 rate to Great Britain, very fine. An attractive cover.

Tiger to Halifax then cross Atlantic by the Allan Line S.S. Moravian. The cover is franked with a 12c Queen Victoria (first printing, tied by a light oval grid cancel) paying the 1865-1872 rate to Great Britain, very fine. An attractive cover which was in transit for about 69 days, and one of about only 15 covers known to be carried by the Pictou and Gulf Ports Co. to Great Britain (see owner's write-up)

Second cover mailed MAR.1.1871 Greenspond to St. John's (MAR.19 transit), then to Halifax via the Inman Line steamer, then by City of Washington to Poole (APR.17 receiver), franked with a 12c brown Queen Victoria, canceled by oval grid cancel. A very fine duo.
