833 c, entire, etc. imageAntarctica: British Expedition 1907-09: Expedition envelope addressed by James Murray to New Zealand, franked by King Edward VII Land 1d. cancelled by Feb. 3 1908 expedition c.d.s., Lyttelton transit and Christchurch Mar. 7 machine arrival on reverse, slight faults nevertheless a scarce item. Also Longman & Co. map of “THE SOUTH POLAR REGIONS” (1874) and a group of postcards incl. Cerebos Table Salt (2), Keen’s Mustard advertising (Wharton XPU-1, XPU-23-a) and later (GA-3, GA-6). Biologist James Murray (1865-1914) was placed in charge of the base camp, afterward writing “Antarctic Days” with co-author George Marston. In February 1914 on a Canadian scientific expedition to the Arctic, Murray and three companions are presumed to have died, having abandoned the ship “Karluk” in an attempt to reach safety. Photo.
