Dominion cancelled by expedition c.d.s., backstamped Lyttelton Mar. 31 transit and May 8 arrival. The letter dated Nov. 27 which, if correct, was one day after the closing of the Antarctic mail suggesting that the cover would have been handed to a member of the party on “Terra Nova” by later favour. 1082 c, entire, etc. imageAntarctica: British Expedition 1910-13: 1912 (Apr. 3) expedition envelope (flap emblem restored) addressed by Apsley Cherry-Garrard to the Earl of Cavan in Hertfordshire, endorsed “English Mail/ACG”, franked by 1d. Dominion cancelled by Lyttelton c.d.s. and sent just a few days after Scott’s death (but before it became known). Apsley George Benet Cherry-Garrard (1886-1959), author of the celebrated account of the expedition “The Worst Journey in the World”, had served as an assistant Geologist, taking part in every major journey in the Antarctic and travelling with the Pole Party two-thirds of the way to the South Pole. 1084 On piece, front, etc. imageAntarctica: British Expedition 1910-13: Sheet of sturdy RYS “Terra Nova” expedition notepaper headed “SS Mongolia/ 7/5/13” with mint Victoria Land 1d. affixed and greetings message written and signed by Griffith Taylor. Thomas Griffith Taylor (1880-1963) was the leader of the successful geological team. Whilst Scott led his party of five to the South Pole, Griffith’s party carried out a separate expedition to the Granite Harbour region. The “Terra Nova” proved unable to reach the party on Jan. 15 as agreed and on Feb. 5 the group had begun a southward trek until rescued from the ice when spotted by the ship on Feb. 18. Taylor had also been a member of Shackleton’s 1907-09 expedition during which he had led the first ascent of Mount Erebus and reached the South Magnetic Pole. Photo. (Image1)
