1066 c, entire, etc. imageAntarctica: Argentine Expedition 1904: Private real photographic postcard of floating icebergs and part of the “Uruguay”, addressed to collector Luis Cañas in Buenos Aires with signed new year greetings message from Jorge Yalour whilst on board, with Argentine 2c. tied to picture side by “ORCADAS DEL SUD/1-ENE 1905/DISTRITO 24 (GALLEGOS)” c.d.s. Also May 2003 Centenary issue of “El Sextante”, journal of the Grupo de Filatelia Naval. Rare, Harvey Pirie, who accompanied the expedition, records that only around 20 covers and cards were cancelled at the Laurie Island Observatory. Lt. Jorge Yalour, one of five Argentine Naval officers, was a veteran of the rescue mission in 1903 to rescue Nordenskjöld’s Swedish Expedition. The new Southern expedition had the double objective of relieving the personnel at Laurie Island and to search for Charcot’s French Expedition believed to have run into difficulties. The “Uruguay” sailed from Buenos Aires on Dec. 10 under the command of Capt. Ismael Galíndez, arriving at Laurie Island in time to celebrate the new year but departing on the same day. Photo. Nimrod/via/Lyttleton”, sent from Christchurch 1907 (Dec. 31) franked Exhibition 1d., with Lyttelton Jan. 1 transit and expedition c.d.s. of Feb. 3 1908 on reverse, having been taken south to the Cape Royds base, and finally receiving red Mar. 9 Christchurch Unclaimed octagon. Meteorologist Lt. Jameson Boyd Adams (1880-1962), known as “The Mate”, was second in command of the shore party and led the three-man support party for the Mount Erebus climb, reaching the top on Mar. 10 1908, the first successful summit. He was also a member of the four man Southern Party, led by Shackleton, setting out on Oct. 29 and achieving the new ‘Farthest South” record. Photo. (Image1)
