Lot 8236 - GREAT BRITAIN, 1952 THE ROYAL PHILATELIC COLLECTION BOOK, gorgeous, clean and unmarked red leather-bound book with the Royal Coat of Arms imprinted on the cover in gold, gold rose embossed on the back cover and raised gilt ribs on spine, by Sir John Michell Wilson, president of the Royal Philatelic Society in London and Keeper of The Royal Philatelic Collection. Published by The Viscount Kemsley at Dropmore Press and dedicated to and with permission from King George XI, this book illustrates and describes the official Royal Philatelic Collection of the British Royal family whose members have been collecting since 1864, merely a quarter of a century after the advent of postage stamps in Great Britain. The most noteworthy philatelist in the family being George V, the Duke of York, who was honorary vice president of what later became the Royal Philatelic Society of London, he invested in stamps including spending £1,450 for a Mauritius 2 pence blue, a record at the time for a single stamp. The plates are painstakingly lithographed in color and in b&w in order to most accurately illustrate the collection, these pages are covered with glassine interleaves, and the stamps are meticulously described with the utmost care to include every detail and avoid error. This book has its original slipcase which has sustained some damage with fabric peeling from one end. The book portrays stamps from Great Britain and British offices in Europe, across the African continent, New Zealand, British Australia, West Indies, British Asia and British America, this book is one of the most beautiful and in-depth of its kind, it is an invaluable resource to anyone collecting from the British Empire.....$1,000 Currently US$ 1,000
