82 imagePre-philately.1814.Letter sent from New York on May 23, 1814, destined for Lisbon, where it arrived on the 9th, coming from England, and with a postage of 350 reis applied. Communications with the United States were interrupted due to the blockade by the English navy. In the text “The communication with your port is now entirely cut off….and yet.. as the blockade of our port prevents any communication with Lisbon...”, the letter must have broken through the blockade, gone to England, was dropped in the post office in Glasgow, where the sea postage to Portugal was also paid. Letter written in Kilmarnock, Scotland on June 3, 1823, transported by the “Booth”, to Lisbon, where it was marked with C.EST.de N, in black and applied postage of 160 réis. It has a Forwarder mark (FWA) on the back, inscribed at the port where the letter proceeded to Lisbon, where it was received on July 16.(Image 1) (All Images)

85 imagePre-philately. Maritime Mail. Composite Rates. Letter written in Bahia on 17.10.1851, hand-delivered aboard the "Figueirense", which arrived in Lisbon on 20.12. Mark C. Est. De N, and 160 reis of maritime postage. It paid 40 reis of territorial postage and 10 reis of the Law of 20/4, totaling 210 reis, different from the 205 reis WRONG (by excess), handwritten by the post office of Mortágua. See L. Frazão. Letter written in Le Havre on 27.5.1847, postmarked Le Havre, and marked PP of 19 decimes, and unable to come by land, it took the British packet “Iberia” to Falmouth, to come to Lisbon, where it arrived on 12.6. It was marked with the British P. and the postage of 600 reis applied. The postage of 600 reis is made up of 480 reis for a letter weighing 1 ½ to 2/8, for a letter from beyond the Pyrenees, plus 120 reis for the postage of the British packet for letters arriving from beyond the Pyrenees. Letter written in Cadiz on 5 September 1846, delivered to the British Consulate, where it was marked with BC/CADIZ, which sent it on the British packet Queen, arriving in Lisbon on 7 July. It was marked with P. Britº LSB-Pb 1 and the postage of 180 reis was applied. On the back it has the inscription “I don’t want to pay, Souza”. A letter written in Rio de Janeiro on February 13, 1852, marked by the English agent in Rio, to be sent to Lisbon on the packet ship Teviot, arriving in Lisbon on March 9, 1852, date mark, which preceded the P. Transatlantic marking. The mark LSB-PB2 (R4) was applied, and the packet ship rate from Brazil was 300 reis. As its destination was Valença, it had 70 reis of territorial postage, 15 reis of the Law of April 20, totaling 385 reis to be paid by the recipient. See L. Frazão. Composite Rates. BCFP #476.
