In Vila Real the postage of 40 reis (5th distance, weight 2/8) was applied, annulled in Lisbon because it was addressed to D. Francisco de S. Luiz, better known as Cardinal Saraiva, appointed Cardinal-Patriarch of Lisbon under pressure from D. Maria in 1840, benefiting from exemption from postage.(Image 1) (Image 2)

Letter sent from Lisbon on 20.1.1808, Pico after the French armies had entered Lisbon, marked “Bureau General/ Armée D'Observation de La Gironde” Armèe 1 (R9). This mark was the precursor of the “Armée de Portugal” known since May 1808. Postage payable in France of 11 decimes. Letter shows signs of soiling on the front and back. 70 imageLisbon * Marks of the English postmaster in Lisbon – On the envelope, LF LX1 in a letter from Lisbon (14.05.36) to Paris (04.06.36) via England to the attention of an English forwarder in London, having paid on arrival in London (30.05.36) by the forwarder the English postage of 3s/6d (handwritten in red) for the sea route to London. On re-shipment from London (01.06.36) to Paris the forwarder paid 1s/6d (handwritten in sepia) for the sea postage to France. On arrival in Paris the French land postage of 28 decimes was paid, handwritten in sepia. Well preserved copy.(Image 1) (All Images)

73 imagePre-philately. Maritime Mail. Letter sent from Angra on 14 September 1823 to Lisbon by the yacht “N. Srª da Guia e Almas”, together with a shipment of wheat. In Angra, it was received at the post office for postage to be paid, and was inscribed “Postage of 120 reis paid”, which made it exempt from any other postage in Lisbon. 80 imagePre-philately. Letter written in Rio de Janeiro on March 9, 1830, delivered on board the “Rio Ave”, and destined for Lisbon. However, it entered Portugal through Porto, where it took the “Barra do Porto” PRT-BA 1 (R3), and the printed postage of 160 reis. From Porto, it was sent by land to Lisbon, where it arrived on June 12. The reason why territorial postage was not applied in Lisbon is unknown, having been delivered at Rua do Ferregial.
