164 Proof imageMexico. 1864 "Eagles" Issue. Mexico District No Overprint 3c. Brown, unoverprinted proof in unused horizontal pair, just touched at left, otherwise displaying good to large margins. The pair shows strong color and is very fresh, with a small scissors cut between stamps. A showpiece of key significance for its rarity and its connection to the very limited issue of only 2,403 stamps which were produced for the local post experiment in Mexico City in 1865-66. To our knowledge, this is one of only two recorded pairs and represents the largest known multiple. MEPSI certificate, which notes that it has been regummed. Scott 18 (proof). (Image1)

Additionally, the unoverprinted stamps are likely remainders from that period and are very rare. Only the stamps from consignment 157-1865, of which 100 were issued, are known to be printed on laid paper, with only two examples recorded to date (Pietsch documented just one).
