The five-line cachet indicates that this card was to travel on the final leg of the journey from Pasadena to Long Beach. However, before he could complete this journey, the Flyer crashed upon takeoff from his stop at Compton, leaving Rodgers seriously injured and with the plane completely wrecked. This is when the three-line handstamp was applied. One month later, Rodgers had recovered just enough to complete the last leg with a totally rebuilt plane. This landed him a position in history books as the first pilot to fly across the entire United States.
This card is believed to be one of seven known from the wreck of the "Vin Fiz" Flyer at Compton, California. An incredible piece of early aviation history in the United States and wonderful example for the crash cover collector. (Image)
