10063   imageKedirie. 1864, 10 cent red on folded letter sent from sub-post office Blitar, via Kedirie 11.5 1868 to merchant Gimberg & Co. in Soerabaya. Stamp with full to very wide margins, tied to cover by black framed FRANCO and the black Kedirie half-round franco 11.5. Stamp placed bottom left on letter with manuscript “Franco” written underneath. Red BLITAR line stamp (17 mm) and Soerabaija 14.5 1868 arrival on back. Stamp in superb condition and showing the very rare double-cancellation that occurred with mail from the sub-post offices. Complete letter sheet without preserved content; some fragility of paper with splitting along folds which has caused the letter front to become separated. AN EXTREMELY RARE LETTER FROM SUB-POST OFFICE BLITAR IN EAST JAVA. SHOWING DOUBLE CANCELLATION WITH KEDIRIE DATESTAMP. LESS THAN 5 SUCH LETTERS RECORDED WITH THE FIRST ISSUE. Blitar operated as sub-post office from 1864 till April 1874 when it acquired status as a regular post office. This letter shows a standard practice of the sub-post office of applying the office name stamp in red on back and cancelling the stamp with the FRANCO postmark; subsequently, the post office of Kedirie struck the datestamp on stamp and letter to affirm dispatch date. An important item of Java postal history. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

10067   imageMakassar. 1864, 10 cent red on letter from Makassar to Sourabaya. Stamp with full to very wide margins, tied by half-round franco cancel 11.5 1868 with an additional strike on the cover; on back is Soerabaija arrival 14.5 1868. A complete folded letter without content, sent to trading company Gimberg & Co. in Soerabaya. On letter front above stamp is noted in ink “Postwissel no. 224, groot F. 8.50”, i.e. this letter was a money order to the value of 8.5 Dutch guilder. An appealing stamp on a complete letter sheet of good paper quality. With certificate NVPH, 2003 (stating that the stamp has no margin bottom right; we disagree). AN EXCEPTIONAL ISLAND USE FROM MAKASSAR ON CELEBES ISLAND AND THE ONLY LETTER RECORDED. ALSO THE ONLY MONEY ORDER WITH THE FIRST ISSUE STAMP WE HAVE SEEN. AN EXCITING TOP RARITY OF THE NEI AND AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE USAGE. A MONEY ORDER SURPASSES IN RARITY OTHER SPECIAL USAGES, SUCH AS REGISTERED OR PRINT MATTER MAIL. The money order notes an amount that was probably prepaid and to be received by the recipient, the merchants Gimberg & Co. in Surabaya. The franking is the standard 10 cent domestic uniform postage rate, and we speculate that a fee was paid at the post office for the service. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)
