image1864, 10 cent red on letter sent from sub-post office Japara to Samarang, dated 29.10 1868. Superb stamp with deep, intense colour and wide margins on all sides, just touched at foot, tied to attractive Chinese cover by centrally struck black framed FRANCO. Sent from Japara sub-post office in Central Java with rare red JAPARA line mark (12 mm) on back. Red circular Samarang 3.11 1868 struck on front. Stamp affixed at top left with manuscript “Franco” noted underneath. A very attractive Chinese folded letter with the characteristic red chops struck across front and back; with the full content preserved. A MOST APPEALING AND UNUSUAL COMPLETE CHINESE LETTER FROM SUB-POST OFFICE JAPARA. OPENS UP WELL TO DISPLAY THE RARE JAPARA MARKING ON BACK. Japara is located 50 km north-east of Samarang; a sup-post office began operation in April 1864 and became a full post office in March 1877. The small line marking of 12 mm is different from that recorded 1864-1877 in red of 33 mm, in Bulterman, Nederlands-Indie Langstempels 1864-1950. (Image 1) (Image 2)

image1864, 10 cent red on complete folded letter sent from sub-post office Rangkasbetong via Serang to Batavia, datelined in Tjilanakakan 13.1 1865 and black circular Serang 13.1 1865. Stamp with full margins all around and a defect to the left side, tied to cover by centrally struck black framed FRANCO. Sent from Rangkasbetong sub-post office in Central Java with rare red RANGKASBETONG line mark (39 mm) on back alongside Batavia arrival 16.1. An extremely rare letter and probably unique. Rangkasbetong, 30 km south of Serang, operated as a sub-post office from 1864 to 1908 when it became a main post office. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

image1864, 10 cent red on folded letter sent from sub-post office Modjokerto to Soerabaija, with red circular Soerabaija 23.9 1865. Stamp placed top left with full margins all around, tied to cover by black framed FRANCO struck diagonally. Sent from Modjokerto sub-post office in East Java with rare red MODJOKERTO line mark (34 mm) on back. Letter sheet without content, with well-struck postmarks and opens up well to show the line marking of Modjokerto on back. The sub-post office of Modjokerto was 40 km south west of Surabaya, and operated from 1864 to July 1872, at which time it became a full post office. This letter shows the standard practice of placing the line marking in red on the back of the letter (as stipulated in Staatsblad van Nederlandsch-Indie 1864 no 5 art. 72), and applying the sorting post office datestamp on the letter front. Letter noted inside “J. Kruy & Co” and sent to E. ten Brinck & Co., one of the important mercantile houses of Java, dealing with trade, finance, and shipping. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

image1864, 10 cent red on letter sent from Soerakarta to Samarang. Stamp with excellent colour and ample margins on all sides, tied to Chinese cover by black framed FRANCO struck diagonally with red circular Soerakarta 16.6 1864 beside. Stamp placed top left with manuscript “Franco” noted below. A traditional Chinese folded letter with name or company chops applied to front and the full content preserved; with well-struck postmarks and some paper damage to the right-hand side of the letter. An early complete letter from the first year of postage stamp usage. Provenance: Van Dieten, Voerman Collection, Jan. 1995, lot 29. (Image 1) (Image 2)

image1864, 10 cent red on folded letter sent from sub-post office Bodjonegoro, via Toeban 26.1 1866 to Soerabaya. Stamp with good to wide margins all around, tied to cover by centrally struck black framed FRANCO, manuscript “Franco” written above stamp. Letter datelined Soemengko 25.1 1866 and brought to the Bodjonegoro sub-post office where the red line mark (33 mm) was applied to the front; transit Toeban with datestamp applied. Soerabaija arrival 27.1 1866 on back. On front is a blue oval “Ngoempak/Malo/Bodjonegoro” of the Malo tobacco company in the district of Ngoempak, department of Bodjonegoro. Very fine complete folded commercial letter with full preserved content. AN EXCEPTIONALLY INTERESTING AND RARE USAGE OF THE FIRST ISSUE FROM THE BODJONEGORO SUB-POST OFFICE, WITH THE LINE MARKING APPLIED TO THE FRONT; THE ONLY EXAMPLE OF THIS KNOWN TO US. Contrary to regulations, the BODJONEGORO line marking was struck on front, instead of the back (as stipulated in Staatsbladen 1864 no 5 art. 72). On the back is a manuscript tax marking “90”, which is difficult to explain; at this time, the cost for a letter to the Netherlands via Marseille was 90 cent. If the letter was re-directed to the Netherlands, this was not noted anywhere. (Image 1) (Image 2)

Stamp with good to wide margins and slightly cut into at lower corner right, tied by crisp and centrally-struck half-round franco cancel 5.9 1867 with an additional strike on cover. With certificate van Dieten, 2020. AN EXCEPTIONAL RARITY OF THE FIRST STAMP ISSUE OF THE NEI WITH PERFECTLY STRUCK POSTMARKS: THE ONLY KNOWN COMPLETE LETTER FROM AMBOINA. Amboina is the capital of the Molucca Islands in the Banda Sea.
