10094   imageSamarang. 1864, 10 cent red on Chinese letter from sub-post office Japara to Samarang. Stamp with wide margins on all sides, attractively tied by greyish black framed FRANCO (struck in Japara) and half-round franco cancel Samarang type I 11.9 1868 with an additional strike on the letter front (struck on arrival). Sent from Japara sub-post office in Central Java with rare red JAPARA line mark (12 mm) on back. A very appealing Chinese folded letter with the characteristic red chops struck across front and back, with the full content preserved. Stamp in perfect condition, letter with a black ink stain affecting front and back. Unusually, two additional strikes of the red Chinese chop have been struck on the stamp diagonally in left corners. Japara is located 50 km north-east of Samarang; a sup-post office began operation in 1864 and became a full post office in March 1877. The small line marking of 12 mm is different from that recorded 1864-1877 in red of 33 mm, in Bulterman, Nederlands-Indie Langstempels 1864-1950. (Image 1) (Image 2)

10095   imageSamarang. 1864, 10 cent red vertical strip of six and a single on envelope from Samarang to the Hague. Stamps cancelled by four strikes of black framed FRANCO and each stamp by the half-round franco cancel Samarang, type I, 25.9 1867 with an additional strike on the cover. On back is red s’Gravenhage 16.11 1867 arrival. The strip of six with wide margins on the sides and cut close at top and bottom, the top stamp with a tiny marginal tear and the single stamp is cut into at right and bottom. A very attractive yellow envelope with a few toning spots in places and with a large part of the back flap missing. Certificate Henk Vleeming, 2018. AN EXTREMELY RARE 70 CENT RATE TO THE NETHERLANDS AND THE ONLY KNOWN VERTICAL STRIP OF SIX ON A LETTER. MOST ATTRACTIVE AND IMPRESSIVE; A TOP EXHIBITION ITEM FOR THE ADVANCED COLLECTOR. 5 LETTERS KNOWN WITH THE 70C RATE TO NETHERLANDS FRANKED BY THE FIRST ISSUE. A correctly franked 70 cent rate for letter up to 15 grams to the Netherlands over Marseille (rate valid 1. May 1866-31. December 1869); the journey took 52 days. It is likely that the letter was posted from a sub-post office where the framed FRANCO was applied before transiting in the main office of Samarang. If a line marking of a sub-post office was applied on back this is now lost with the missing black flap. Provenance: Bulterman Collection, NPV, May 2018, lot 5069 (hammer 7200 EUR).
