Stamp cut into at base, tied by well-struck framed FRANCO with very clear red Bandjermasin circular datestamp placed upper right. Soerabaija arrival 5.2 on back. A MAJOR RARITY OF SOUTH KALIMANTAN POSTAL HISTORY. ACCORDING TO TAY, THE FRAMED FRANCO HANDSTAMP IS NOT PREVIOUSLY RECORDED ON LETTER FROM BANDJERMASIN. Sent to merchants van Delden in Soerabaija. The letter demonstrates the practice that developed in the Dutch East Indies of placing the stamp on the left side of the letter, very often with manuscript “Franco” on cover or under the stamp. Stamp in exceptional quality with wide margins and part of sheet margin to right, deep, intense shade and strong, clear impression; tied by well-struck black framed FRANCO alongside red Batavia circular datestamp. Envelope with backflap missing and a few other minor faults; company stamp of pharmacy G. Wilcke, Batavia on back. A clean envelope with the perfect duo of framed FRANCO and red datemark, both perfectly struck; an early usage from Batavia, sent from Wilcke’s popular pharmacy in the Rijswijk part of the Weltevreden district of Batavia. 10028   image1864, 10 cent red on letter from Batavia 20.1. 1865. Stamp in exceptional quality with wide, even margins, tied to cover by well-struck black framed FRANCO alongside red Batavia circular datestamp. Letter sent to “Sumatrasche Weeskamer” in Padang, with arrival stamp 27.1 on back. Stamp placed top left with manuscript “Franco” written under. Letter sheet without content. ONE OF THE FINEST SURVIVING LETTERS WITH THE FIRST ISSUE STAMP. STAMP IN PERFECT CONDITION AND BEAUTIFUL HANDWRITING ON FRONT ON A FRESH LETTER FREE OF CREASES OR MARKS. The stamp is attractively cancelled with half of Franco cancel on the stamp, as per postal regulations. Letter sent to the Orphan Chamber in Padang; the orphan chamber (“weeskamer”) was a government body found in most major cities in the Dutch Indies; it was distinct from an orphanage and responsible for overseeing the administration of the inheritance and estates of orphans. Stamp in perfect quality with wide, even margins, tied to cover by diagonally struck black framed FRANCO alongside red Batavia circular datestamp 6.8; red line stamp of MEESTER CORNELIS (antiqua type) on back. Letter sent to the President of the Orphan Chamber in Menado on the island of Sulawesi. Stamp placed top left with manuscript “Franco” written underneath. Letter sheet without content, very fresh and with well-struck postmarks; tear to the reverse which runs through the Meester Cornelis line stamp. RARE LETTER FROM MEESTER CORNELIS SUB-POST OFFICE WITH THE 50 MM LINE MARK IN RED SENT VIA BATAVIA TO SULAWESI. 3 LETTERS WITH THE FIRST ISSUES ARE KNOW FROM THIS OFFICE. Meester Cornelis in the East district of Batavia (today Jatinegara) was named after the Malay-speaking Calvinist preacher and landowner Cornelis Senen. A sub-post office opened here in 1864 which changed it’s status to post office in Oct. 1873. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

Perfect stamp of fresh colour with wide, even margins, tied to cover by well-struck black framed FRANCO applied diagonally alongside red Benkoelen circular datestamp. Folded letter with full English-language content, and address to a Chinese person in Batavia written with Chinese brush in bold characters (perhaps redrawn at a later date). Instruction bottom left “P. Macassar”. A VERY RARE LETTER FROM A MERCHANT IN BENKOELEN SENT TO A CHINESE IN BATAVIA. THERE ARE ONLY 2 OR 3 KNOWN LETTERS FROM BENKOELEN WITH STAMP CANCELLED BY THE FRAMED FRANCO. A LETTER FULL OF CHARACTER. The letter was sent on the Dutch steamship Makassar which sailed between major ports in the East Indies archipelago. (Image 1) (Image 2)

Letter sent to Officer Otto Kuphal with the Artillery Company of Weltevreden Barracks. Stamp placed top left with manuscript “Franco” written below. Batavia arrival mark 25.7 on back. Envelope with some browning and paper splits, and light ink corrosion to address, but otherwise very fine and appealing. Stamp in exceptional quality with full, even margins and deep colour, tied to cover by centrally struck black framed FRANCO alongside red Djokjokarta 9.10 1864 circular datestamp. Red line stamp Klatten struck on back with manuscript date 9/10/64 below. Letter sheet without content sent to the merchants Chevallier & Co in Samarang. AN EXCEPTIONAL LETTER WITH A STAMP IN PERFECT CONDITION. LETTERS FROM THE SUB-POST OFFICES ARE ESPECIALLY RARE AND THIS ONE OPENS UP WELL TO SHOW THE LINE MARK WITH HANDWRITTEN DATING BELOW; UNIQUE WITH MANUSCRIPT DATE. Klatten, in Central java between Djokjokarta and Surakarta, opened as sub-post office in April 1864 and became a full post office in March 1872. Stamp with full margins cut close in a few places and a little stained, tied to cover by centrally struck black framed FRANCO alongside red circular Magelang datestamp. Complete folded Chinese envelope with full content preserved. Samarang arrival 15.8 1865 on back. VERY RARE, ONE OF ONLY THREE LETTERS KNOWN WITH THE MAGELANG FRANCO HANDSTAMP AND RED DATEMARK. A very interesting commercial mail between member of Chinese communities, with full Chinese text inside and four chops applied across the sheet; probably these are name chops of the company or of an individual sending the letter. A superb letter sent from Makassar, the important trading centre on the south part of Sulawesi Island; very fine and attractive letter with a few minor tears at top. 10035   image1864, 10 cent red on letter from sub-post office Padang Pandjang via Padang 29.7 1865 to Batavia. Stamp with full to wide margins, tied to cover by diagonally struck black framed FRANCO with red circular Padang datestamp on the cover. On reverse is very well struck black octagonal PADANG PANDJANG. Complete folded letter without content. Batavia arrival 3.8 1865 on back. Stamp with a light fold in upper margin and letter with some paper splits along folds, two hinges applied to top to reinforce paper. THE ONLY LETTER KNOWN TO US FROM THE PADANG PANDJANG SUB-POST OFFICE. A VERY IMPORTANT SUMATRA POSTAL HISTORY ITEM WHICH OPENS UP WELL FOR DISPLAY TO SHOW THE BOXED NAME MARKING ON REVERSE. Padang Pandjang operated as sub-post office from April 1864 till August 1875 when its status changed to a full post office. Located in the highlands of West Sumatra about 70 km east of Padang, the letter will have travelled around high mountains and the Merapi Volcano, a journey of about 200 km, to get to the main post office of Padang for transit to Batavia. Superb stamp with good colour and full to wide margins on all sides (cut somewhat unevenly), tied to fresh cover by centrally struck and very crisp black framed FRANCO with red circular Pamakassan arrival 22.5 1865 on the back. Complete folded letter without content. A superb letter in a perfect state of preservation sent to Madura Island, east of Java. An important letter sent to Pamakassan, the administrative centre of the Madura Residency during the colonial era and an important military and economic territory of the Dutch East Indies. Mr. Kraaijennoord was previously Secretary of the city of Bezoeki and in April 1865 he assumed the post as Assistant Resident of Madura, i.e. an administrative official in the Interior Administration of the Dutch East Indies. 10037   image1864, 10 cent red on letter sent from sub-post office Malang to Soerabaya. Superb stamp with deep, intense colour, strong impression and wide margins on all sides, tied to fresh cover by centrally struck black framed FRANCO with red circular Passoeroean ?.9 1864 on the cover. Letter datelined Tanah Wangie 5.9 1864, red Malang line mark on back alongside arrival Soerabaija 9.9 1864. Complete folded letter of excellent paper quality with full preserved content. A superb letter in an excellent state of preservation sent from the small Malang office; opens up very well to display the well-struck Malang and arrival postmarks on back. A very rare letter from the village of Tanah Wangie, located 10 km outside Toeren, south east of Malang. The place was an important plantation area (mostly sugar cane, tobacco and cocoa bean). Written on quality paper embossed with the words “Tanah Wangie, Malang” indicating it was most likely sent from a major plantation. The sub-post office of Malang operated from 1864 until granted post office status in May 1873; as a sub-post office it was under the Residency of Passoeroean. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

10038   image1864, 10 cent red on letter sent from Riouw to Samarang. Stamp with full to wide margins on all sides, just touching at foot, tied to very attractive Chinese cover by centrally struck black framed FRANCO with red circular Riouw 28.2 1865 on the letter. On back is red Samarang arrival 13.3 1865. A most appealing Chinese envelope with four large seal markings or chops applied on front (probably name or company chops) and a large woodcut decoration on back. Letter with full content preserved. A very tidy and fresh letter sheet. With certificate APS, 2002. A very rare and fully preserved commercial correspondence from the Chinese community in Riouw on Sumatra’s east coast, close to Singapore; the letter would have travelled by sea to Samarang on Java. The ethnic letters from the Chinese community in the Dutch East Indies continues to be an underexplored area of research, especially the communication network and postal services of Chinese mail handlers and the significance of the many chops applied to the letters.
