 Padang. 1870, 5 cent green with Padang half-round franco postmark 29.1871. Well struck complete postmark on a stamp with excellent perforation and a few light creases only visible from back. Additionally, struck by part of the part of the
framed line mark SIBOGA, of the small collecting office (“bestelhuis”) that was located 350 km north of Padang on Sumatra’s west coast and which operated prior to May 1873. Only 4 stamps of the first three issues are known with the extremely rare

 Padang. 1870, 10 cent brown on superb printed matter envelope sent to Enschede, the Netherlands; perfect stamps tied by well-placed Padang half-round franco postmarks 1.10 1871 with an additional strike on the front. Manuscript “Via
Brindisi” on front and red cachet of Boon Intveld & Co. Padang. Enschede arrival 18.11 1870 on back. Pre-UPU printed matter to the Netherlands via Brindisi was 10 cent Dec. 1869-May 1876.

A letter from the well-known correspondence between merchants Boon Intveld in Padang and Elderink and Sons in Enschede, containing the complete price list of products for sale, as well as list of arriving and departing vessels (and their cargo) to
the port of Padang. An exceptional item of real historical significance.

 Passoeroean. 1870, 10 cent brown on letter to Batavia; very fine stamp centrally struck by Passoeroean half-round franco postmark 22.5 1873 with an additional strike on the front. Letter with address in a strikingly idiosyncratic hand to
the director of the Department of Justice in Batavia. Red Batavia arrival 27.5 1873 on back. Tidy letter sheet without content, with some light ink corrosion to the front. An extremely rare letter and very late use of the Passoeroean half round
franco on a complete letter. About five letters are known from Passoeroean.

 Poerworedjo. 1870, 10 cent brown on Chinese letter from sub-post office Wonosobo, via Poerworedjo to Samarang; stamp tied by framed FRANCO and Poerworedjo half-round franco postmark 1.5 1872 with an additional strike on the front. Line
mark Wonosobo in red (31 mm) on back alongside Samarang circular arrival 3.5 1872. Folded Chinese letter with the standard red chops on front; letter and stamp affected by insects with some loss to front and part restoration. The FRANCO cancel was
applied in Wonosobo, 40 km north of Poerworedjo where they subsequently struck the date mark. The unique letter with the half-round franco of Poerworedjo; despite condition issues, a top rarity of the NEI half-round franco postmarks.

 Samarang. 1870, 10 cent brown on Chinese envelope from Samarang to Tagal; stamp in very fine condition tied by well-struck Samarang half-round franco postmark 12.8 1871 with an additional strike on the front and manuscript “franco”.
Appealing complete Chinese wrapper with four red chops struck on front and a red band around. Tagal arrival 13.8 on back. Minimal damage to front probably from insects. A most decorative entire letter from the Chinese community in the north part of

 Soerabaija. 1870, 5 cent and 50 cent on folded letter from Soerabaija to Amsterdam; stamp with minor perforation faults tied by centrally struck Soerabaija half-round franco postmark 1.7 1871 with an additional strike on the front and
manuscript “franco”. Also manuscript directive “per landmail via Triest”. Commercial oval cachet of merchant Houtbeckers in Soerabaya in bottom left corner and Amsterdam arrival 22.8 1871 on back. Very rare and with an attractive, colourful franking.
The 55 cent rate for overland via Triest (Jan. 1870-May 1876) is much rarer than the 60 cent rate via Marseille. The Triest route was available until April 1877. Route marking handstamps for Triest became available around March 1872, which is why
this letter carries no route marking.
